Bobcats Come Up Short in 2-0 Loss at Roadrunners Despite Solid Pitching
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Quinnipiac baseball team kicked off the 2020 season Friday night at UTSA for the second time in four seasons and come up just short in the season opener, 2-0.
Christian Nicolosi (Stony Point, New York) was solid in the opener for the Bobcats despite taking the loss as he allowed just one run on four hits over 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts on the day, including a trio of strikeouts in the first inning.
Kyle Maves (Burlington, Ontario) doubled to right center to lead off the game for the Bobcats and they ultimately got runners to first and third but could not get a run across.
The Roadrunners got a single run across in the bottom of the first as Dylan Rock singled and stole second before coming home to score on an infield single from Griffin Paxton.
Quinnipiac nearly pushed a run across the board in the top of the seven as Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) reached on a fielding error and stole second in the next at bat. After a pitching change, Lutz advanced to third on a wild pitch but was stranded.
UTSA added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Rock doubled to right center and after an error and a walk, he came home to score on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
Maves led the Bobcats as he went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk while Lutz walked and stole two bases and Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) drew a pair of walks.

- Nicolosi recorded five strikeouts for the first time since April 13 at La Salle and for the fourth time over the past two seasons
- He allowed just four hits in an impressive starting effort.
- Maves doubled for just the seventh time in his career after six as a first year in 2019 as he recorded the Bobcats only hit Friday night.
- Marrero drew a pair of walks for the sixth time in the past two seasons and 14th time in his career
- Lutz stole two bases in a game for the first time in his career as he now has just 11 stolen bases in 84 games
- Connor Mahoney and Gabriel Romano combined to allow just three hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts over the final 3 2/3 innings
- Mahoney's appearance was just the 13th of his career and both pitchers made their first appearances since April 13 of last season at La Salle.
- The Bobcats and Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon at Roadrunner Field with first pitch set for 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT
