HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team returns back home for a pair of games at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium when the Bobcats host the No. 4 UConn Huskies on Friday before the Vermont Catamounts come to Hamden on Sunday afternoon.
Scouting UConn
The Huskies have had a challenging start to the 2019 season and lived up the task, posting a 5-1 record with all six games coming against nationally-ranked opponents. UConn has shut out three of its last four opponents, including No. 6 Harvard, and have allowed just six goals through the first six games. Abby Gooderham and Marie Auer led the team with four goals each while Gooderham leads the team with 10 points. Antonia Tiedtke has five assists to go with one goal and Svea Boker has three goals and two assists to cap off the scoring leaders. Cheyenne Sprecher has been stellar in goal with a 5-1 record, three shutouts, 23 saves, a .793 save percentage and 1.00 GAA.
All-Time vs. UConn
Quinnipiac is in search of its first win all-time against UConn, coming into Friday's meeting with an 0-14 record dating back to 1998. Last season, the Huskies took down the Bobcats, 8-0, in Storrs, the third meeting between the two teams since Quinnipiac joined the BIG EAST.
Scouting Vermont
Vermont comes into the weekend 2-3 on the season but are winners in two of its last three games. The Catamounts have wins over Brown and Hofstra along with losses against Syracuse, Stanford and Fairfield. Kate Hall leads the Catamounts with four goals and nine points on the season, scoring a goal on all four shots on goal, while Bailey Matthews and Clodagh Ferry each have three goals. Sierra Espeland has one shutout on the season at Hofstra, and sports a 2.76 GAA and .667 save percentage.
All-Time vs. Vermont
The Bobcats are 6-1 all-time against the Catamounts, with last year's win in Burlington putting the program back to its winning ways against Vermont after a loss on the road in 2016. Quinnipiac had won five straight meetings to open the history between the two teams.
Professor Appreciation Day
Quinnipiac field hockey players will recognize the professors, faculty and staff at Quinnipiac with an appreciation day on Friday prior to the start of the game. The players were allowed to each invite one member of the Quinnipiac community to be recognized.
Honorable Mention
Freshman goalkeeper Hedda Biermann-Ratjen was recognized on the honorable mention this week from the BIG EAST Weekly Awards after an impressive first start against Sacred Heart in which she won her first game and had her first shutout. Biermann-Ratjen was the first player recognized as honorable mention from the BIG EAST since Amanda Blum closed out the 2018 season on the honorable mention after three goals in the final two games.
The Quest for 200
Main has led the Bobcats to 197 victories over her 25 seasons after taking down Sacred Heart a week ago, putting her just three away from picking up the 200th victory of her career. All but 15 of Main's victories have come at the Division I level and she has amassed 111 of those wins in conference play. Main is looking to become the 20th active NCAA Division I Field Hockey coach to record 200 wins and the 41st all-time.
Better Believe It
Bianka Strubbe has been off to a furious start in 2019, already equaling her goal total (3) from 2018 and is just two points from her point total. Strubbe recorded her first career two-goal game at Hofstra on Monday after scoring a penalty stroke goal against Sacred Heart. She now has points in six of her last seven games dating back to last year.
First of Many
Biermann-Ratjen picked up her first career win and first career shutout with a six-save performance against Sacred Heart. Biermann-Ratjen is the first Quinnipiac goalkeeper to win her first career start since Amanda DeLouise '11 in 2008.
Helping Pairs
Inès Ruiz Martinez picked up a pair of assists at Hofstra for her second career two-assist game and first since her freshman season after helping out on both of Strubbe's goals. Ruiz Martinez now has recorded two assists in all four seasons in her career.
Very Val
Valerie Perkins also recorded a pair of assists at Hofstra on Monday as she inserted the penalty corner that led to both of Strubbe's goals. Perkins' two-assist game was the first of her career as she picked up her first points of the season.
Here Comes Eva
Freshman Eva Veldhorst recorded her first goal of the 2019 campaign with a critical insurance goal in the Bobcats' 2-0 win over Sacred Heart. Veldhorst is among the Bobcats top freshmen as she is second on the team with six shots on goal.
Jessy J
Sophomore Jess Halley assisted Veldhorst's first career goal as she recorded a point for a second straight game after her goal at Stanford. Halley now has a goal and an assist on the season, setting a new career-high with three points.
