HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 4 Quinnipiac acrobatics and tumbling is set to begin the 2019 National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association's National Championship tournament, beginning Thursday with the quarterfinals against No. 5 Fairmont State.
Scouting Fairmont State
The Falcons come into the national championships with their best record in program history as Fairmont State comes in with an 8-1 record and were 4-0 in the MEC. Fairmont State has won six straight meets following a narrow loss vs. Converse in the only loss of the season. Two weeks ago, the Falcons won the inaugural Mountain East Conference Championships with victories over West Liberty and Glenville State. In addition to the conference championship, the Falcons won 12 individual event championships.
All-Time vs. Fairmont State
The Bobcats are 9-4 all-time against the Falcons dating back to the 2010-11 season, the inaugural NCATA season. Quinnipiac has won six straight meets against Fairmont State dating back to its last loss in the 2011-12 season. The Bobcats are also unbeaten against the Falcons at the NCATA National Championships with a 2-0 record.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac won its fourth consecutive meet to close out the regular season with a 274.645-255.940 victory over Alderson Broaddus and completed a third straight undefeated season against ECAC competition. Quinnipiac recorded a pair of 10.00 scores for the first time in the season. Overall, the Bobcats recorded season-bests in six heats and tied two event highs.
The Bracket
The Bobcats and Falcons will meet in the third NCATA quarterfinal matchup Thursday with the winner meeting the winner of No. 1 Baylor and No. 8 Gannon in the semifinals on Friday. In the other quarterfinal matchups, No. 3 Azusa Pacific and No. 6 Converse meet in the first quarterfinal matchup with the winner set to face the winner of No. 2 Oregon and No. 7 Hawaii Pacific in the semifinals. After the semifinals on Friday, Saturday features the Individual Event Championships in addition to the championship match in the evening.
Weekly Awards
Freshman Asia Johnson earned a pair of weekly awards for the final week of the regular season as she was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week for a second consecutive week and earned the NCATA Rookie of the Week. Johnson's NCATA honor was the second national award for the Bobcats this season while she was the first Quinnipiac rookie to ever earn NCATA Rookie of the Week.
Perfect 10
The Bobcats are coming off their final meet of the season in which they recorded a pair of 10.00 scores for the first time in the same meet in 2019. Quinnipiac's toss group in the compulsory event recorded its second 10.00 of the season against Alderson Broaddus while the Bobcats also scored a 10.00 in the open heat of the toss event. On the season, the Bobcats have averaged a 9.92 in the toss heat of compulsory, its highest heat average in any heat.
Toss Up
The Bobcats also tied its season-high with a 9.70 in the 450 Salto heat of the toss event on the way to tying the event-high score with a 29.20 as the Bobcats have been among the best toss teams in the country, averaging a score of 28.98 in toss this season.
Pyramids of Bobcats
The Bobcats pyramid event has really come on strong as of late, capped by a 9.70 in the synchronized pyramid heat to record its best score of the season. The Bobcats have also been solid in the open pyramid after a 9.75 against Alderson Broaddus, and have not recorded lower than a 9.75 in the heat in its last five meets.
Everyday I'm Tumblin'
Quinnipiac had several impressive performances in the tumbling event in its final meet of the regular season as Melanie Mancini and Cassidy Osher combined to record a 9.400 in the duo pass, good for a new season-high in the heat. Mancini also recorded a tumbling season-high individually for a fourth straight meet as she posted a 9.700 in the 6-element pass. Chelsea Werner has also been sensational in her return to the mats as she scored a 9.525 in the aerial pass, by far the highest score in the heat this season.
