HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball game scheduled for Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Hartford has been cancelled due to unplayable field conditions. Quinnipiac returns to the field on Wednesday as the Bobcats travel to UMass to face the Minutemen at 3 p.m.
Scouting UMass
The Minutemen come into Wednesday's game with a 13-19 record with a 5-7 mark in A-10 play. UMass has won three of its last four games, including winning the Baseball Beanpot over Harvard last Monday before taking two of three games at Maine. Anthony Videtto leads the Minutemen with a .328 batting average, 38 hits, nine doubles, 23 RBIs and 28 walks. Collin Shapiro is also above a .300 batting average at .310 and has a team-high 24 runs scored. As a team, UMass has a .257 batting average while the pitching staff has a 5.77 ERA.
All-Time vs. UMass
UMass is 8-5 all-time against Quinnipiac dating back to the first meeting between the two programs in the 2000 season. The Bobcat and Minutemen are meeting for the first time since the 2016 season when the Bobcats won the only meeting, 7-0. Quinnipiac has won the last two meetings in 2015 and 2016, both via shutouts.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats returned to MAAC play this past weekend with a three-game series against the Siena Saints. The two teams split Friday's doubleheader to open the weekend before Siena came out victorious in the finale on Saturday in the 13th inning after a fielding error by the Bobcats.
Extra Innings
Quinnipiac's extra-innings game with Siena was its third extra innings game of the season, with the Bobcats owning a 1-2 mark in extra innings this season. It was Quinnipiac's longest game, and first 13 inning game, since April 16, 2016 when the Bobcats also went 13 innings against Iona.
Ostberg's Awesome
Ian Ostberg has recorded hits in eight of his last nine games, including four multiple hit performances over that span. His 42 hits this season rank second on the team only to Andre Marrero, as well as his .302 batting average. Ostberg is one of four Bobcats with 10 or more extra base hits while his 13 stolen bases are third on the team.
Bend it Like Beckham
Colton Bender has continued his impressive season for the Bobcats as he has career-highs with 29 starts, 36 hits, 19 RBIs, 14 runs scored, five doubles and 120 at bats. He has also thrown out an impressive eight runners stealing bases this season, one season after cutting down 11 runners.
Scafariello's Resurgence
After a tough start to the season, Scafariello has recorded hits in six of his last eight games to raise his batting average by 37 points. He opened the series at Siena with an RBI doubles and two walks before adding an RBI single in the series finale. With his RBI double on Friday, Scafariello surpassed the 100 RBI mark in his career and is now approaching 100 runs scored in his career. He would become the seventh player in Division I program history with 100 runs and 100 RBIs in his career.
Maves Making Moves
Kyles Maves has been one of the Bobcats top offensive weapons over the past five games, recording 10 hits in his five-game hitting streak to raise his batting average to .280 on the season. He has also scored nine runs in his last five games to move into second on the team with 26 runs scored. He has shown off his speed on the base paths, stealing a MAAC-leading 16 bases that ranks 68th in the nation.
Workin' On the Railroad
Andrew Workman picked up a pair of saves over the weekend to give him five on the season, putting him tied for third in the MAAC and 93rd in the nation. He allowed his first earned run over the week since March 13, and has allowed just one earned run in his last 23 innings pitched. Workman is fifth in the MAAC with a 1.45 ERA.
Marrero Magic
Andre Marrero continued his impressive season with five hits in the three-game series at Siena to extend his hitting streak to five games and he also has hits in eight of his last nine games. Marrero has three doubles over his last five games to give him 14 extra base hits while he has three runs to give him a team-high 28 runs scored.
