HAMDEN, Conn. – After 15 games away from Connecticut, the Quinnipiac baseball team is back in the Nutmeg State Wednesday afternoon as the Bobcats travel down the road to Yale Field to take on the Yale Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m.
Scouting Yale
The Bulldogs come into Wednesday's game with a 5-10 record on the season and are coming off two wins at Stetson over the weekend. During their 10-day trip to Florida, the Bulldogs went 2-6 after series at Florida, UCF and Stetson. Wednesday marks the home opener for the Bulldogs, their first of 10 home games on the season. Yale is led offensively by Simon Whiteman with a .388 batting average, racking up 26 hits in 67 at bats to go with team-highs of 13 runs scored and 16 stolen bases. Jake Gehri has a team-high three homes and is batting .348 while Griffin Dey has two home runs and 13 RBIs as well as 10 walks. Probable starter Ben Gibbs has made just one appearance this season, allowing two runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts in one inning of work.
All-Time vs. Yale
Quinnipiac is 5-7 all-time against Yale during the Bobcats Division I era, dating back to the 1999 season. The Bobcats fell to the Bulldogs last season, 16-9, in a mid-week clash on May 1, 2018. Evan Vulgamore homered as part of a 2 for 2 day at the plate while Brian Moskey had a team-high three hits and Andre Marrero had a pair of hits. Quinnipiac is looking for its first win against Yale since March 25, 2015 when the Bobcats downed the Bulldogs, 11-3, in Northborough, Massachusetts.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats went 1-2 at the Spider Invitational hosted by Richmond, with the Bobcats defeating the host Spiders in the final game of the weekend, 6-5. Quinnipiac fell against Toledo, 9-8, in 10 innings on Friday night to kick off the tournament before the Bobcats were defeated by Bryant this past Saturday, 5-2. Throughout all three games, the Bobcats scored key late-inning runs to either attempt a comeback or extend a lead.
Player of the Week
For a third consecutive week, the Bobcats had a player recognized during the MAAC Weekly Awards selection as Evan Vulgamore was named the league's Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Vulgamore follows Andre Marrero (March 12) as player of the week and Chris Enns (March 5) was also honored as the pitcher of the week.
On the Verge of a Milestone
Head coach John Delaney comes into Wednesday's game with 99 career victories, putting him one win away from becoming the third Quinnipiac head coach in program history to record 100 career wins. Delaney will join his predecessor Dan "Skip" Gooley (439 wins) and Earl Matthewson (174 wins) as the only coaches in program history with 100 career wins. Matthewson coached nine season from 1988-96 while Gooley coached 24 seasons in two stints from 1977-87 and 2002-14 before Delaney took over in 2015.
High Voltage
Evan Vulgamore has been one of the Bobcats' best offensive weapons through the first 15 games this season, and he really heated up this week against Florida Atlantic and the competition at the Spider Invitational as he racked up 10 hits. Vulgamore has multiple hits in four straight games, a double in four straight games, as well as five runs scored and four RBIs in that span. On the season, Vulgamore leads the Bobcats with a .356 batting average, .409 on base percentage, .610 slugging percentage, 21 hits, 15 runs, nine doubles, two home runs and 13 RBIs.
Epic Comeback
In Quinnipiac's extra-inning loss to Toledo, the Bobcats scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to overcome a 7-2 deficit and tie the game to force extra innings. Despite an Anthony Cruz in the top of the 10th inning, the Bobcats could not hang on to the lead as they gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the 10th to fall, 9-8.
First Career Home Runs
Anthony Cruz and Ian Ostberg both had memorable weekends as they each hit their first career home runs in back-to-back games. Cruz hit his first career home run in the 10th inning against the Toledo Rockets before Ostberg smashed his first home run against Bryant with a ninth inning blast as he tried to spark the offense. Six different Bobcats have hit home runs this season.
Correira's Making Memories
Arthur Correira picked up the first win of his career with a spectacular start for the Bobcats on Sunday as he struck out eight batters in his six innings of work, allowing just one earned run on two hits and two walks. Correira has been solid in his first three career starts, sporting a 2.35 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP and has 15 strikeouts in just 15.1 innings of work. All three Quinnipiac weekend starters are averaging at least a strikeout per inning.
Saving the Day
Andrew Workman was spectacular in his first save of the season at Richmond on Sunday, capping off Correira's start with five strikeouts in two innings of work to earn the save. Workman has been solid in six appearances out of the bullpen with a 3.37 ERA and a .238 opponent batting average.
