HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team travels back down south for a third consecutive weekend when the Bobcats travel to Norfolk, Virginia, to face the Norfolk State Spartans in a three-game series.
Scouting Norfolk State
The Spartans come into the weekend with an 0-7 record on the season and are riding a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season. Norfolk State opened the season being swept by James Madison in a three-game series before dropping games against North Carolina Central, NJIT and Old Dominion. Despite the team's struggles, Alsander Womack is off to a hot start with a .417 batting average, with five of his 10 hits going for extra bases. Womack is tied with Dionte Brown, sporting a .412 batting average, for the team lead with five RBIs and four runs scored. Norfolk State pitchers have struggled this season, combining for a 7.43 ERA. Jonathan Mahoney has made a pair of starts for the Spartans, going 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA and has 14 strikeouts in 13 innings while opponents are batting just .241 against him.
All-Time vs. Norfolk State
This weekend marks the first series between the two teams as they have met for just a single game once before with Norfolk State winning, 5-4, in 10 innings on Feb. 22, 2014. The game was part of the Spartan Classic, played at Marty L. Miller Field.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac picked up its first win of the season last weekend, defeating then-No. 20 Wake Forest, 8-6, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The offense came alive early and Tyler Poulin shut down the Demon Deacons for the win. The Bobcats then fell to the Demon Deacons and Elon Phoenix in a doubleheader on Sunday to close out the weekend.
Nationally Ranked Win
With Quinnipiac's win at Wake Forest, the Bobcats took down a nationally ranked opponent for the first time since the 2004 season when the Bobcats beat the Virginia Cavaliers, 13-11, in a in a wild comeback on March 8, 2004. Assistant coach Pat Egan was a sophomore on that Bobcats' squad.
Poulin's Power
Tyler Poulin made one of his best starts in a Quinnipiac uniform to date as he dazzled through 6.1 innings on the mound, striking out a Quinnipiac-high of 12. Poulin's 12 strikeouts were his most in a game since striking out 12on two occasions for the County College of Morris before transferring to Quinnipiac. Poulin's 12 strikeouts are also the most by a Quinnipiac pitcher since Derek Lamacchia '13 struck out 13 batters against Fordham on March 2, 2012.
Heating Up
After not picking up a hit the first weekend of the season, Andre Marrero took off as he batting .500 this past weekend with six hits in 12 at bats to lead the Bobcats. Marrero capped off the weekend going 5 for 8 in the Sunday doubleheader, including his first home run of the season against Elon. Marrero is now tied for the team lead with six hits on the season. Marrero also leads the team with three stolen bases.
Hot Start
Sophomore Ian Ostberg has been hitting the ball well to start the 2019 season, recording a hit in all five games so far to take a five-game hitting streak into the weekend. Ostberg is tied with Marrero and Dylan Lutz for the most hits on the team with six.
Starting off Well
Freshmen Kyle Maves had a breakout weekend for the Bobcats as he went 4 for 13 and recorded his first career extra-base hit with a double. Maves now has four hits on the season, including his impressive 3 for 4 day at the plate against Elon.

Evan Vulgamore has been one of the Bobcats most effective run producers on the season, leading the team with four RBIs through five games and has scored a team-high five runs. Despite just four hits on the season, Vulgamore has also walked twice and been hit by a pitch to reach base eight times.
Making it Count
Arthur Correira made his first career start for the Bobcats against Elon in the weekend finale last Sunday, pitching five innings with five strikeouts. He took a hard-luck loss after allowing just one run on four hits in the start. Correira made 18 relief appearances as a freshman before his first start Sunday.
Saving the Day
Matthew Draper also shined for the Bobcats on Saturday in the win at Wake Forest as the right-hander recorded his first career save in his second relief appearance. Draper allowed just one hit and struck out a batter in 1.2 innings of work to earn the save in Quinnipiac's first win of the season.
