HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 15 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey returns to ECAC Hockey play for the first time in the 2019-20 season this weekend as the Bobcats travel to Dartmouth and Harvard in its first weekend of league play.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac was swept at Arizona State this past weekend, falling in the opening game 5-3 before coming up short in game two, 4-1. Despite scoring the first goal Friday night and pulling within a goal early in the third period, the Bobcats could not come back for the win. Saturday night, the Bobcats scored a second period goal to come within two goals but the Sun Devils answered once again.
Scouting Dartmouth
Dartmouth comes into the weekend with an 0-2-0 record after falling to Harvard and New Hampshire in its first weekend of the 2019-20 season. Despite scoring seven goals, the Big Green struggled on the defensive side allowing six goals per game. Dartmouth fell to Harvard to open the season, 7-3, before falling at New Hampshire the following night in overtime, 5-4. Matt Baker leads the team with two goals while Jeffrey Losurdo is the team-leader with three points through the weekend.
All-Time vs. Dartmouth
Quinnipiac is 21-10-2 all-time against the Big Green heading into this weekend's matchup after splitting last season's series. Both teams came away with 5-1 wins at home in the 2018-19 rendition The Bobcats are looking for their first win in Hanover for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
Scouting Harvard
Harvard dominated Dartmouth in a season-opening 7-3 win at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center last Friday night. Three different Crimson recorded three-point games against the Big Green while Jack Rathbone buried two goals. Six different players recorded goals in the win and 10 players recorded points while Cameron Gornet shined between the pipes with 44 saves on 47 shots in his first start as a senior.
All-Time vs. Harvard
The Bobcats fell to the Crimson in their series finale last season in a tight 2-1 loss to fall to 14-15-5 in 34 meetings dating back to Quinnipiac joining ECAC Hockey in 2005-06. Harvard has held the upper hand as of late, going 4-1-1 against Quinnipiac in its last six games.
National Rankings
The Bobcats fell six spots in the USCHO.com Division I Poll to No. 15 in the nation and remain ranked in the poll for a 26th consecutive week dating back to Oct. 29 of last season. The Bobcats are also receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll
Pro Update
Quinnipiac alumni continue to dominate the professional hockey ranks as Connor Clifton scored his first NHL Regular Season goal after netting two in the playoffs last season. Devon Toews continues to fill the stat sheet as he recorded an assist against Ottawa Tuesday night to give him seven assists and nine points on the season. Sam Anas added another assist last weekend to give himself nine points while Brogan Rafferty has assists in two of his last four games to give him six points. Tanner MacMaster had a four-game point streak snapped his last time out on Wednesday with the Marlies.
Rand's Winning Ways
Head coach Rand Pecknold continues to approach milestone wins in his career. In addition to having 514 wins to rank 12th all-time among Division I Men's Hockey coaches, he is just 12 wins from passing former men's and women's tennis head coach Mike Quitko for the most wins by a coach in Quinnipiac Athletics history. Pecknold and Quitko are the only two Quinnipiac coaches to record 500 wins with Quinnipiac programs.
Automatic Odeen
Odeen Tufto recorded assists in both game s for the Bobcats over the weekend at Arizona State to extend his current point streak to four games with five assists in that span. Tufto continues to be among the league's top scorers as he leads ECAC Hockey with nine assists and is tied for third with nine points. His nine assists also rank tied for second in the nation. In his career, Tufto now has 92 points as he is just eight points away from becoming Quinnipiac's 41st 100-point scorer and is tied for the 14th most active points while his 68 career assists are tied for the sixth most among active men's division one players.
The Goose is Loose
Guus van Nes recorded his first career multi-point game with a power-play goal and an assist in the Bobcats weekend opener at Arizona State. van Nes assisted the Bobcats' first goal of the weekend before scoring his first career goal on an extra attacker power-play goal to extend his point streak to two games.
