HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac men's soccer team opens the 2018 season with two consecutive home games vs. Boston College on Friday and UMass Lowell on Monday. Coming off a season in which the Bobcats won five of their final seven contests, head coach Eric Da Costa's squad has aspirations of continued success in 2018.
TOP STORYLINES HEADING INTO 2018
- The Bobcats open the 2018 season with two consecutive home contests at the Quinnipiac Soccer Stadium. After today's matchup against Boston College, Quinnipiac will host UMass Lowell on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
- Today's tilt with Boston College is one of seven 2018 contests against teams ranked in the top-64 of last year's final RPI, including North Carolina State in September.
- Head Coach Eric Da Costa named a leadership council for the 2018 season that includes senior Derek Parker, senior Matthew Taylor, junior Conor McCoy, sophomore Paulo Soares, and sophomore Simon Hillinger.
- Quinnipiac returns most of its nucleus from last year's MAAC semifinal team and still has many of the same players in positions up the middle from its MAAC regular season champion team of 2016. Chrysostomos Iakovidis (goalkeeper), McCoy (center back) and Jeppe Haehre (center back) have started their first two seasons in the middle of the defense and are back for their junior years, while Dally and Whelan have each earned All-MAAC honors at forward.
- Parker has been a regular starter at outside back. He was a MAAC All-Academic Team selection last year, and helped Quinnipiac to a regular season MAAC championship in 2016.
- Taylor enters his fourth season as a regular starter in the midfield, and is a two-time MAAC All-Academic Team selection. He has eight goals and seven assists in his career, including the first-ever men's soccer goal scored at the new Quinnipiac Soccer Stadium.
- McCoy has been a starter at center back in both of his first two seasons at Quinnipiac, and was named to the 2018 Preseason All-MAAC team after completing a solid sophomore season a year ago. He has been named All-MAAC both seasons. He earned first-team All-MAAC honors as a freshman, when he scored in the MAAC Championship game, a 3-1 defeat to Rider, and second-team honors last year.
- Soares had an immediate impact on the Bobcats in his rookie season last fall, starting all 19 games as a defensive midfielder after a standout career at Quincy (Mass.) High School. He was named to the MAAC All-Rookie team, and picked up his first collegiate point with an assist in a 2-0 win over Siena.
- Hillinger also had a successful freshman season for Quinnipiac last fall, playing in 15 games as an outside back, including two starts. He was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week after a two-goal performance in a 3-2 win over Marist, which included the tying goal late in regulation and the game-winner in double overtime.
