QU Baseball Field — Hamden, Conn.
HAMDEN, Conn. — Powered by the clutch hitting of junior Liam Scafariello and senior Ben Gibson, who tag-teamed for some walk-off magic, the Quinnipiac baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Monmouth Hawks at the QU Baseball Field on Sunday. The final score of each game was 4-3 (the second game went 11 innings).
After sweeping the three-game series with MAAC foe Monmouth, Quinnipiac is the only undefeated team in the conference.
In Sunday's first game, Scafariello launched a three-run homer over the left-field fence in the middle innings for the second straight contest. On Saturday, Scafariello's three-run dinger propelled the Bobcats to an 8-3 victory over the Hawks. On Sunday, Scafariello added a twist — a game-winning single in the Bobcats' last at-bat.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Gibson delivered the walk-off heroics with a game-winning single in the 11th inning.
In the seven-inning first game, the score was 3-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh. With one out, sophomore Andre Marrero ripped a single to left field, and he advanced to second on a wild pitch before sophomore Dylan Lutz walked. One batter later, with two outs, Scafariello hit a walk-off single to right field, bringing Marrero home and igniting a Quinnipiac celebration.
Monmouth scored a run apiece in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead after three. Hawks freshman starter John Martin cruised through the first three innings without allowing a hit, but Quinnipiac figured out Martin in the bottom of the fourth.
Lutz, who has a team-best .317 average, led off the fourth with a single up the middle to break the ice for the Bobcats. Junior Brian Moskey then singled to left, putting runners at first and second with no one out and the hot-hitting Scafariello coming up.
Scafariello jumped on a first-pitch breaking ball and blasted a home run to left to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. His sixth homer this season is second-best on the team; Gibson has seven.
Meanwhile, Quinnipiac starter Brandon Shileikis led the Bobcats in the pitching department.
A graduate student, Shileikis gave up a leadoff double to Hawks junior JD Andreessen in the top of the fourth inning, with Monmouth ahead 2-0. But Shileikis stranded the runner at second, notching the third out of the inning by striking out Hawks sophomore Danny Long swinging on a 3-2 pitch.
Shileikis' clutch pitching set the stage for Scafariello's clutch hitting in the home half of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Shileikis gave up a one-out single but induced a ground ball to shortstop Dylan Lutz that became a nifty 6-4-3 double play.
Shileikis almost went the distance in the seven-inning contest. He pitched 6-1/3 innings, giving up three runs and no walks while striking out three and scattering nine hits. His 3.47 ERA is third-best on the staff among pitchers with at least seven innings pitched this season. His record remains 3-3 after Sunday's no-decision.
Bobcats senior closer Mike Davis (1-0) notched the win, while junior reliever Jordan McCrum (0-1) took the loss for the Hawks.
Trailing 3-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, Monmouth knotted the score. After an inning-opening groundout, Shileikis gave up back-to-back singles and then gave way to Davis, who hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. Monmouth scored the tying run on a fielder's choice groundout, but Davis recorded a strikeout with the go-ahead run at third to end the inning and keep the score at 3-3.
Enter the QU duo of Scafariello and Marrero to bring home the win for the Bobcats in the bottom of the inning.
Quinnipiac produced four runs in game one Sunday on six hits, led by Scafariello (2-for-4, HR, 4 RBI).
MOSKEY EXCELS AS BOBCATS PREVAIL IN MESSY GAME TWO
Game two of the doubleheader was a sloppy contest featuring six errors — three by each team — on a windy and unseasonably cool April day with temperatures in the low 40s.
Monmouth scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, and Quinnipiac answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the second to knot the score 1-1. Senior Anthony Cruz's RBI double scored Gibson, who reached on an error.
The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Moskey's RBI single plated freshman Ian Ostberg, who led off the frame with a single to center field and promptly stole second.
Quinnipiac's 2-1 lead held up until the top of the seventh, when Monmouth scored two unearned runs, thanks to two QU errors, and took a 3-2 lead. But the Bobcats tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when Moskey came through again, stroking a two-out double down the left-field line to bring home Marrero, who had singled with one out and reached second base on a wild pitch.
The contest entered extra innings knotted 3-3, but not before an eventful top of the ninth. Against Bobcats closer Mike Davis, Monmouth loaded the bases with one out on a walk followed by a single and another walk. But Davis retired the Hawks' No. 3 and 4 hitters on a called third strike and a flyout.
In the bottom of the 10th, Quinnipiac threatened when Ostberg drew a one-out walk on a 3-2 count and advanced to second base on a groundout to the pitcher. With two outs, sophomore Evan Vulgamore hit a grounder to short and beat the throw to first for an infield hit, but Ostberg was waved home and thrown out at the plate.
When Quinnipiac completed the sweep in the bottom of the 11th, Moskey was again in the thick of it, leading off the inning with a hard-hit single to left field and hustling to second on an outfield error.
That brought up Scafariello, who was denied the opportunity for a second walk-off hit in as many games when he was intentionally walked — but that gave the walk-off opportunity to Ben Gibson, who stroked a one-out game-winning hit to score Moskey and set off another last-at-bat celebration at QU Baseball Field.
Moskey paced the Bobcats in the second game, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and the game-winning run. Gibson went 2-for-5 with one run and the game-winning RBI.
Junior reliever Andrew Workman (1-0) got the win, throwing two scoreless innings with one strikeout and one walk. Junior starter Tyler Poulin pitched 6-1/3 innings and allowed no earned runs (three runs overall). He gave up four hits, struck out eight and walked five. Monmouth senior Austin Counsellor (2-1) took the loss.
Before the first game of this series on Saturday, Quinnipiac had opened the season with 26 straight road games in a two-month span. After a trio of home games this weekend, the Bobcats' record at QU Baseball Field is a tidy 3-0 — despite the messy game two — to go with their unblemished 6-0 record in MAAC play.
