WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — After a pulse-pounding weekend series sweep of MAAC rival Monmouth, perhaps the Quinnipiac baseball team was due for a letdown against nonconference foe Hartford — and the Hawks indeed defeated Quinnipiac 8-2 on Tuesday.
Quinnipiac took a short-lived 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Junior Liam Scafariello, who launched two three-run homers this past weekend and added a walk-off single, singled to left field to start the second and then stole second base.
Senior Ben Gibson, who also delivered a walk-off single on Sunday, singled to right field, scoring Scafariello. Freshman Ian Ostberg singled up the middle and Gibson advanced to second base, and the runners reached second and third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Julius Saporito. With two outs, junior Kevin Huscher singled, driving in Gibson.
Hartford evened the score in the bottom of the second.
Freshman starter Robert Lewis retired the first two batters for Quinnipiac, but Hartford staged a two-out rally via a double, a single, a wild pitch and another single. Just like that, Hartford had knotted the game 2-2.
Hartford took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning, without the benefit of a hit. A 6-foot-3 right-hander, Lewis got a quick flyout but then walked Hawks freshman John Thrasher, who had a big day (3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI).
Thrasher advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt and reached third on a wild pitch. Lewis issued another walk, and with runners on the corners, he threw another wild pitch, scoring Thrasher.
So the Hawks led 3-2, and they extended the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Thrasher got the rally going with a leadoff double to left center. He advanced to third on a single and scored on a sacrifice fly. One walk and one RBI single later, Lewis was lifted and sophomore reliever Colin Donnelly took the mound.
A 6-foot-1 left-hander, Donnelly surrendered an RBI single before the inning was done, and Hartford led 6-2. The Hawks added two more runs (one unearned) in the bottom of the eighth to forge the 8-2 final score.
Hartford redshirt freshman starter Tyler Coppo notched the win; the 6-foot-2 right-hander is 1-0. Lewis (1-1) took the loss.
Ostberg went 2-for-4 for the Bobcats, and he is now batting .290, fourth best on the team.
NEXT UP
Quinnipiac is right back at it on Wednesday — the Bobcats travel to Boston College for a nonconference game at 4 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
