HAMDEN, Conn. — After playing 26 straight road games over two months to start the season, the Quinnipiac baseball team will finally bat second this weekend when it welcomes in Monmouth for a three-game MAAC home series. The slate is scheduled to begin with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. (start time has slid back one hour due to Friday's weather) and end with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m. Times are subject to change due to weather and field conditions.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bobcats were in action on Thursday at Hartford and came up on the short end of a high-scoring 12-11 affair after the Hawks scored five times in the eighth inning to complete a comeback. Senior Julius Saporito (pictured) helped the Bobcats jump out to a 9-3 lead with a two-run homer in the second inning and a two-run double in a four-run fifth inning. Senior Ben Gibson drove in the first run in the fifth with a double, and freshman Ian Ostberg capped off the rally with an RBI single. Sophomore Evan Vulgamore (3-for-5) had hits in his first three at-bats, stretching a personal streak of hits in six straight plate appearances after ending the Saint Peter's series with three straight homers.
HOME AT LAST
The Quinnipiac baseball team has played 26 straight road games to start the 2018 season. The Bobcats almost got to break out the home whites against Yale on Tuesday, March 20, but the game was postponed an hour before game time due to field conditions. The beginning of the season has seen the Bobcats playing in Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Long Island and New Jersey.
BOBCATS SET NEW D-I RUNS RECORD
In the second game of the doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Saturday, March 31, Quinnipiac set a new Division I program record for most runs scored in a single game, with 28. The team's old record of 24 runs was set against Wagner College during the 2003 season. The last time the Bobcats scored at least 20 runs in a game was in 2007, when they scored exactly 20 against LIU Brooklyn.
THEY'VE GOT THE POWER
The Bobcats' offensive explosion against Saint Peter's (see above) was led by the long ball, as they hit seven home runs hit in the record-setting game. Sophomore Evan Vulgamore smacked three home runs and drove in six runs. Senior Ben Gibson launched a pair of three-run shots. Junior Liam Scafariello hit a solo blast, and freshman Frank Cascio picked up his first collegiate home run. Gibson leads the team with seven home runs this season and has the highest slugging percentage (.563). Scafariello and Vulgamore are tied for second with four home runs a piece. Scafariello leads the Bobcats with 23 runs batted in, while Vulgamore (20), Gibson (20) and junior Brian Moskey (20) are right behind.
LIGHTS OUT
Senior closer Mike Davis has three saves this season, picking them up in three straight appearances against Old Dominion (twice) and College of Charleston. Last year, Davis had a spectacular season from start to finish, recording nine saves, a 0.96 earned run average, 29 strikeouts and only six walks.
BOBCATS EARN FIFTH SPOT IN FIRST NEIBA POLL
Quinnipiac was ranked fifth in the first New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Poll, announced on Monday, March 26. This came after the Bobcats had won eight games in a tough 20-game road stretch. This was the first time the Bobcats cracked the poll since 2015 and only the second time in the last decade. The Bobcats also received votes in the second NEIBA poll.
MAAC PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac baseball was picked to finish eighth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league office announced on Feb. 7. The Bobcats were placed between Siena and Rider. Marist was slated to finish first, garnering seven first-place votes, with Canisius, Fairfield and Niagara rounding out the top four.
HEAD COACH JOHN DELANEY
Head Coach John Delaney is in his fourth season at the helm with Quinnipiac baseball. He has amassed 79 wins in his three-plus years as head coach, including 29 wins in 2015, which tied the program record for most victories in a single season. The Bobcats went 29-27 (15-9 MAAC) overall that year, finishing third in the conference standings — their highest regular season conference finish since winning the regular season Northeast Conference title in 2007, when Delaney played for the team.
NEXT UP
The Bobcats have midweek road games this week at Hartford and Boston College before hosting Siena in a three-game MAAC series next Saturday and Sunday.
