HAMDEN, Connecticut — No. 3 Quinnipiac Acrobatics & Tumbling will return home Sunday, April 8, at 12 p.m. for a big NCATA showdown with No. 5 Gannon University in the final regular season meet before the NCATA Championships. Before the meet, the Bobcats will honor their six seniors on Senior Day.
Last Meet (Azusa Pacific University 283.170, Quinnipiac 282.860)
- Quinnipiac obtained three event wins against Azusa Pacific.
- The Bobcats also obtained eight heat victories throughout the evening.
- The Bobcats' most successful part of the meet was when they struck for three straight heat victories in the Compulsory Event, including back-to-back 9.90 scores in the Pyramid and Toss Heats.
- Alexandria Barnes scored three heat victories for Quinnipiac in the Compulsory Event to spark the Bobcats' momentum.
- Quinnipiac also stormed out of the gates in the second half, sweeping the Toss Event as Erin Redding picked up victories in all three heats.
Bobcat Storylines
- Before Sunday's contest against Gannon, Quinnipiac will honor its six seniors: Jenna Adams , Samantha Gormley , Alyssa O'Connor, Abby Ziser, Grace Manthey and Stephanie Van Albert.
- The Quinnipiac Acrobatics & Tumbling team ranked third in the first NCATA in-season ranking for team championship qualification, the league office announced on March 27, 2018.
- Quinnipiac, which was ranked fourth in the preseason poll, is 4-2 and trails only Baylor University and Azusa Pacific University in the ranking.
- The Bobcats are led by senior captains Jenna Adams, Samantha Gormley, Alyssa O'Connor and Abby Ziser.
- The NCATA National Championships will be held in Erie, Pennsylvania at Gannon University April 27-29.
NCATA Storylines
- Quinnipiac is looking to return to the NCATA semifinals for the third straight year and the fifth time in program history.
- Quinnipiac is coming off a six-win 2017 season; the Bobcats fell in the NCATA semifinals to eventual NCATA national champion Baylor (279.325-273.945).
- The Bobcats advanced to the NCATA semifinals after a thrilling win against Alderson Broaddus that saw the Bobcats shake off a halftime deficit to win eight of the last nine heats and the team event. Quinnipiac defeated Alderson Broaddus 270.645-264.755.
- Quinnipiac won two NCATA individual national championships last year.
- Head coach Mary Ann Powers was named the ECAC Acrobatics & Tumbling League Co-Coach of the Year in 2017.
Leading the Way
- Abby Ziser was named the ECAC Acrobatics & Tumbling Athlete of the Week on March 12 after propelling the Bobcats to their first-ever win over Oregon.
- Ziser, who is one of the Bobcats' four captains for 2018, appeared in eight total heats for Quinnipiac. She started strong in the Compulsory Event, scoring a 9.85 in the Pyramid Heat and an 8.75 in the Tumbling Heat. She continued the Bobcats' strong start, striking for a 9.85 in Heat 2 and a 9.70 in Heat 3 of the Pyramid Event.
- Ziser continued her strong afternoon for Quinnipiac with a 9.65 in the first heat of the Toss Event and a 8.7 in the Quad Heat of the Tumbling Event.
- The reigning ECAC Rookie of the Year, Melanie Mancini, was named the NCATA Specialist of the Week after a strong showing against King University on March 4.
- Mancini dazzled for Quinnipiac, scoring wins in all five heats in which she was featured against King University, starting with a 9.80 victory in Heat 3 of the Acrobatics Event and continuing the momentum in the Pyramid Event with a 9.70 in the Synchronized Pyramid Heat.
- Mancini stayed hot throughout the second half of action, scoring a 9.75 in the Synchronized Toss Heat and a 9.80 in the Open Toss Heat. Mancini finished the day strong with a 9.55 victory in the Tumbling Duo Heat paired with freshman Cassidy Osher.
- Jenna Adams was named the ECAC Acrobatics & Tumbling Athlete of the Week on Feb. 19 after starting the season strong against Baylor. A senior captain, Adams appeared in 11 heats for the Bobcats, propelling them to five victories and a strong start. The Bobcats struck for a perfect 10.0 in the Pyramid heat, a meet high.
- Adams continued to lead the way throughout the Compulsory event, appearing in all the heats for Quinnipiac as the Bobcats were tied at 38.0 after the first event. Adams then helped the Bobcats by appearing in two heats in the Toss event, leading to the Bobcats' 29.15-28.40 victory in the event. Adams also contributed to the Bobcats' 97.53 score in the team event.
