ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Quinnipiac baseball team has played 25 straight road games to start the 2018 season, and is scheduled to stretch that streak to 26 straight before its home opener on April 7. The Bobcats almost got to break out the home whites against Yale on Tuesday, March 20, but the game was postponed an hour before game time due to field conditions. The beginning of the season has seen the Bobcats playing in Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Long Island, and New Jersey. This will be the first game that the Bobcats will play in their home state of Connecticut.
LAST TIME AGAINST UCONN
The Bobcats last faced UConn on April 17, 2017, falling to the Huskies, 4-3. Current senior Ben Gibson hit a two-run home run in the contest, and current junior Brian Moskey also had a base knock. Three pitchers currently on staff made an appearance against the Huskies, graduate student Brandon Shileikis, senior Wyatt Hamilton, and junior Andrew Workman.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
As a team, the Huskies are batting .263 for the season, and have a trio of batters hitting over .300. Thad Phillips leads the team with a .351 average, but has only played in 16 of 24 games this season. Zac Susi leads UConn with 29 hits on the year and is batting .330. Isaac Feldstein leads the Huskies eight home runs and 21 runs batted in.
The Huskies own a 3.65 team ERA and have a .247 batting average against. Tim Cate and Mason Feole have each worked more than 40 innings and have an ERA less than 4.00. Chase Gardner has also worked quite a bit, with 35.1 innings pitched. Those three, along with Jeff Kersten, account for all UConn starts on the hill.
NEW D-I RUNS RECORD
In Game 2 of their doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Saturday, March 31, Quinnipiac set a new Division I Program Record for most runs scored in a single game with 28. They broke the old record of 24 runs, which was set against Wagner College during the 2003 season. This was the first time that the Bobcats scored at least 20 runs in a game since 2007, when they scored exactly 20 runs against LIU Brooklyn.
THEY'VE GOT THE POWER
The Bobcats offensive explosion was lead by the long ball, as there were seven home runs hit in the record setting game. Sophomore Evan Vulgamore smacked three home runs and drove in six runs. Senior Ben Gibson launched a pair of three-run shots. Junior Liam Scafariello hit a solo blast. Freshman Frank Cascio picked up his first collegiate home run.
Gibson leads the team with seven home runs on the season and has the highest slugging percentage (.573). Scafariello and Vulgamore are tied for 2nd with four home runs a piece. Scafariello leads the Bobcats with 22 runs batted in. Vulgamore (20) and Gibson (19) are right behind him.
LIGHTS OUT
Senior closer Mike Davis is 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season, picking them up in three straight appearances against Old Dominion twice and College of Charleston. A year ago, Davis had a spectacular season from start to finish, ending with nine saves and a 0.96 earned run average, striking out 29 and walking only six.
NEIBA POLL
Quinnipiac was ranked fifth in the first New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Poll, announced on Monday, March 26. This came after the Bobcats had won eight games in a very tough 20-game road stretch. This was the first time the Bobcats cracked the poll since 2015 and only the second time in the last decade. The Bobcats also recieved votes in the second NEIBA poll.
MAAC PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac baseball was picked to finish 8th in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on February 7, 2018. The Bobcats were placed between Siena and Rider.
