HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac Bobcats will look to preserve their season-long perch atop the MAAC baseball standings when they host the Iona Gaels for a three-game series this weekend at the QU Baseball Field.
First-place Quinnipiac (10-2 MAAC) and Iona (4-10) are slated for a Saturday doubleheader, at noon and 3 p.m., and a single game Sunday at noon. Iona is in 10th place in the 11-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Manhattan (9-3) is just one game behind QU in second place in the MAAC, while Canisius (10-5) is third.
Quinnipiac is in the midst of an eight-game home stand. It was originally nine straight, but the nonconference home game scheduled against UMass on Wednesday was rained out. There is no word yet on whether the game will be rescheduled.
LAST TIME OUT: QUINNIPIAC 6, HARTFORD 5 (10 INNINGS)
Walk-off magic visited the QU Baseball Field again Tuesday as senior Julius Saporito's base hit in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Quinnipiac a come-from-behind 6-5 nonconference victory over the Hartford Hawks.
The Bobcats rallied from two-run deficits twice in the game — first in regulation to force extra innings at 3-3, and then in the 10th inning after Hartford took a 5-3 lead in the top of the 10th on a two-run homer. But in the bottom of the 10th, Quinnipiac had an answer.
With one out sophomore Andre Marrero singled to left field, and junior Brian Moskey singled to right as Marrero raced to third. A wild pitch brought Marrero home and sent Moskey to second, and the Hawks' lead was down to one run. Bobcats slugger Liam Scafariello, who hit a solo homer in the sixth inning, was walked intentionally.
One out later, with Quinnipiac down to its last out and the tying run at second, sophomore Evan Vulgamore tied the game 5-5 with an RBI single to right center as Scafariello scampered to third. Up stepped Saporito, who followed with his single to right center, scoring Scafariello and giving the Bobcats a 6-5 victory.
Junior reliever Andrew Workman (2-1) got the win for the Bobcats. In addition to Scafariello and Saporito, Moskey (2-for-5, two runs) and Vulgamore (3-for-5, game-tying RBI, run) paced the QU offense.
A game-winning hit in the final at-bat has been a welcome friend for the Bobcats this season. On Sunday, April 8, Scafariello and senior Ben Gibson tag-teamed for their own walk-off magic, powering Quinnipiac to a doubleheader sweep of Monmouth at the QU Baseball Field. The final score of each game was 4-3, and the second game went 11 innings.
LAST TIME OUT IN THE MAAC:
SUNDAY — CANISIUS 8, QUINNIPIAC 5
SATURDAY, GAME 1 — QUINNIPIAC 9, CANISIUS 5
SATURDAY, GAME 2 — QUINNIPIAC 3, CANISIUS 0
The Bobcats emerged from the weekend with their fourth straight MAAC series win this season, taking two of three games from Canisius at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
After falling behind 7-0 on Sunday, the Bobcats rallied to make it a game but couldn't quite complete the comeback and lost to Canisius 8-5. Despite the loss, the Bobcats maintained their first-place standing in the MAAC.
On Saturday, Quinnipiac swept a doubleheader with Canisius. In QU's 9-5 win in game one, junior Liam Scafariello paced a 10-hit attack with two solo home runs. In game two, Bobcats starter Brandon Shileikis recorded a masterful 3-0 shutout in the seven-inning game (one doubleheader contest is typically seven innings). A 6-foot-1 graduate student, the right-handed Shileikis struck out seven while allowing only four hits and two walks.
Quinnipiac made it dramatic in game two, waiting until the top of the seventh to score all three runs. Scafariello led off with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on freshman Colton Bender's RBI single to right field. After junior Kevin Huscher walked with two outs, he and Bender advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, and then freshman Ian Ostberg provided some insurance runs with a two-RBI single.
As it turned out, Shileikis didn't need the insurance. He closed out the shutout with two strikeouts (both swinging).

BOBCATS REMAIN NO. 4 IN NEIBA POLL
Quinnipiac was ranked fourth again in this week's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Coaches Poll, which was announced Monday. QU was No. 4 the previous two weeks.
This week's rankings:
1 – UConn
2 – Northeastern
3 – Bryant
4 – Quinnipiac
5 – Yale
This week's NEIBA poll was the fifth of the season. Quinnipiac was ranked fifth in the season's first poll, announced on Monday, March 26. It was the first time the Bobcats had cracked the poll since 2015 and only the second time in the last decade. In the second NEIBA poll on April 2, the Bobcats dropped from the top five but received votes.
The poll is conducted by New England college baseball coaches in Division I; the top five teams are ranked. There are also NEIBA polls for Divisions II and III.
HOME SWEET HOME
After playing 26 straight road games over two months to start the season, Quinnipiac finally hosted a visitor at the QU Baseball Field in the weekend series against Monmouth on April 7-8. The Bobcats' three-game series sweep was the first time they swept the Hawks. The long road exodus had sent the Bobcats to such destinations as Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Long Island and New Jersey.
In the doubleheader with Monmouth on April 8, Quinnipiac was propelled to victory by the clutch hitting of junior Liam Scafariello and senior Ben Gibson, who tag-teamed for some walk-off magic. Each player had the game-winning hit in Quinnipiac's last at-bat, and the final score of each game was 4-3.
MAAC PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac was picked to finish eighth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Bobcats were placed between Siena and Rider. Marist was slated to finish first, garnering seven first-place votes, with Canisius, Fairfield and Niagara rounding out the top four.
HEAD COACH JOHN DELANEY
Head Coach John Delaney is in his fourth season at the helm with Quinnipiac baseball. The Bobcats went 29-27 (15-9 MAAC) overall that year, finishing third in the conference — their highest regular season conference finish since winning the regular season Northeast Conference title in 2007, when Delaney played for the team.
