HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac men's tennis team will be the No. 2 seed in this weekend's MAAC Championships and will open play at 10 a.m. on Saturday against third-seeded Marist at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
The Bobcats made it to the final weekend of the regular season undefeated in MAAC play, but fell to top-seeded Monmouth on Saturday to end up as the second seed in the four-team field. Quinnipiac had an impressive run of six straight conference wins prior to the Monmouth defeat, including a narrow 4-3 win over Marist on April 10.
In the first meeting with Marist, which was held at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club, sophomore Axel Stern provided the winning point with a narrow 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles to break a 3-3 tie. Stern and freshman Hielke Moore also provided the swing point in doubles with a 6-4 win at No. 2, while Moore tied the score in singles at 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.
The Marist match also saw a spectacular effort from senior Julian Rozenstein, who earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Javier Restrepo, who won the MAAC Player of the Year Award last season. Rosenstein entered the Monmouth match a perfect 12-0 in league play in both singles and doubles, but finally suffered his first league defeats of the year.
Rozenstein enters the MAAC Tournament with 137 career wins — tying him for second all-time in Quinnipiac history, behind Kei Ezaka '17 with 143 — and 78 singles wins, which sets a new school record. Rozenstein (18), Stern (17) and Moore (16) rank 1-2-3 on the Bobcats in singles wins this season, while Rozenstein's combined 35 wins is five ahead of both Stern and Moore.
Senior Kyle Alper, who has played at No. 2 and No. 3 singles this year, is also in the top 10 in Quinnipiac history with 93 wins. Sophomore Patrick Cachapero has combined with Rozenstein to go 9-3 in doubles in dual matches this season, while also going 5-2 in singles in league play, mostly at the No. 3 position.
The Bobcats will look to earn their first MAAC title after coming close in 2016, when they dropped a close 4-3 decision to Monmouth in the finals. A year ago, Quinnipiac fell to Marist 4-0 in the semifinals.
