WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — The second-seeded Quinnipiac men's tennis team rallied from an early hole and had a chance to seize the momentum, but third-seeded Marist regrouped and went on to a 5-1 win in the MAAC Semifinals on Saturday afternoon at the Mercer County Tennis Center.
The loss ends Quinnipiac's season with a 9-10 record, while Marist will move on to face the winner of the other semifinal between Monmouth and Fairfield in the MAAC Championship on Sunday.
The Bobcats dropped the doubles point, despite a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles from senior Julian Rozenstein and sophomore Patrick Cachapero. That win marked the 138th of Rozenstein's career, combining singles and doubles, moving him alone into second place on Quinnipiac's all-time win list, five behind record-holder Kei Ezaka '17.
Quinnipiac fell into a big hole in singles, as only Cachapero got off to a good start at No. 4. He went on to a quick 6-0, 6-4 win to tie the score 1-1, before Marist regained the lead 2-1 with a win at No. 3.
Rozenstein and junior Freddie Zaretsky, meanwhile, bounced back from quick first-set losses to force their matches to a third set. Rozenstein fell in the first set 6-1 but recovered with a 6-2 win in the second. Zaretsky overcame a 6-1 loss in the first to win a tight second set 7-5. However, the Red Foxes were able to take the momentum back on both courts, with Javier Restrepo earning the 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win against Rozenstein at No. 1 to make the score 3-1. Rudolf Kurz then rallied for a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 win versus Zaretsky at No. 2 to finish off the win. The Red Foxes also picked up a win at No. 5 before the match was officially called.
Quinnipiac will look to bounce back next year after losing two seniors, Rozenstein and No. 3 singles player Kyle Alper, who rank second and ninth on the Bobcats' all-time win list, respectively.
