ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Quinnipiac baseball team has played 25 straight road games to start the 2018 season, and is scheduled to stretch that streak to 26 straight before its home opener on April 7. The Bobcats almost got to break out the home whites against Yale on Tuesday, March 20, but the game was postponed an hour before game time due to field conditions. The beginning of the season has seen the Bobcats playing in Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Long Island, and New Jersey. This will be the first game that the Bobcats will play in their home state of Connecticut.
LAST TIME AGAINST CENTRAL CONNECTICUT
The Bobcats last faced Central Connecticut State on April 5, 2017, when they fell to the Blue Devils, 6-3. Current junior Liam Scafariello blasted his 11th home run of the season in the game, and current senior Anthony Cruz scored a run. Current pitchers on staff that made an appearance in the game include Blake DeCarr and Mike DellaMedaglia.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
As a team, the Blue Devils are batting .282 for the season, and have a trio of batters hitting over .300. Chris Kanios leads the team with a .352 average, followed closely by Peyton Stephens, who is batting .350. Dean Lockery leads Central Connecticut State with 23 hits on the year and is batting .333. Mitch Guilmette is the Blue Devils leader in home runs, four, and runs batted in, 13.
The Blue Devils own a 4.82 team ERA and have a .278 batting average against. Mike Appel has seen the most work on the hill, pitching 30.1 innings over six appearances. Only one other pitcher, Brandon Fox, has thrown over 20 innings (20.2).
NEW D-I RUNS RECORD
In Game 2 of their doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Saturday, March 31, Quinnipiac set a new Division I Program Record for most runs scored in a single game with 28. They broke the old record of 24 runs, which was set against Wagner College during the 2003 season. This was the first time that the Bobcats scored at least 20 runs in a game since 2007, when they scored exactly 20 runs against LIU Brooklyn.
THEY'VE GOT THE POWER
The Bobcats offensive explosion was lead by the long ball, as there were seven home runs hit in the record setting game. Sophomore Evan Vulgamore smacked three home runs and drove in six runs. Senior Ben Gibson launched a pair of three-run shots. Junior Liam Scafariello hit a solo blast. Freshman Frank Cascio picked up his first collegiate home run.
Gibson leads the team with seven home runs on the season and has the highest slugging percentage (.573). Scafariello and Vulgamore are tied for 2nd with four home runs a piece. Scafariello leads the Bobcats with 22 runs batted in. Vulgamore (20) and Gibson (19) are right behind him.
LIGHTS OUT
Senior closer Mike Davis is 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season, picking them up in three straight appearances against Old Dominion twice and College of Charleston. A year ago, Davis had a spectacular season from start to finish, ending with nine saves and a 0.96 earned run average, striking out 29 and walking only six.
NEIBA POLL
Quinnipiac was ranked fifth in the first New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Poll, announced on Monday, March 26. This came after the Bobcats had won eight games in a very tough 20-game road stretch. This was the first time the Bobcats cracked the poll since 2015 and only the second time in the last decade.
MAAC PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac baseball was picked to finish 8th in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on February 7, 2018. The Bobcats were placed between Siena and Rider. Marist was slated to finish 1st, garnering seven first-place votes, with Canisius, Fairfield, and Niagara rounding out the top four.
HEAD COACH JOHN DELANEY
Head Coach John Delaney returns for his fourth season at the helm with Quinnipiac baseball. He has amassed over 70 wins in his three-plus years as head coach. Quinnipiac won 29 games in 2015, which ties the program record for most wins in a single season. The Bobcats went 29-27 (15-9 MAAC) overall that year, finishing No. 3 in the conference standings - their highest regular-season finish in the conference since finishing No. 1 in 2007, when Delaney played for the team.
