HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team closes out the regular season with a road game at Niagara on Saturday at 1 p.m., hoping for a win and for other results to go their way as it clings to its MAAC Tournament hopes.
MAAC UPDATE
The Bobcats stand at 1-6 in the MAAC and in ninth place, but can still finish in a multi-team tie for sixth place with a win at Niagara. Iona (2-4) and Manhattan (2-5) are ahead of the Bobcats, but also have difficult games left (Iona faces Marist and Monmouth, Manhattan faces Fairfield). If Quinnipiac can upset Niagara and end up in a three-way tie with Iona and Manhattan, the three teams would be 1-1 against each other and the sixth and final MAAC playoff spot would come down to a tiebreaker that would need to be determined after the conclusion of the regular season on Wednesday. If Siena (1-4) also joined the tie, the Bobcats would be eliminated.
LAST TIME OUT (SIENA 13, QUINNIPIAC 9)
Quinnipiac fell behind 7-0 in the first half and couldn't dig itself all the way back as it fell 13-9 at Siena on Wednesday. Ashley Bobinski and Allison Kuhn each had two goals and an assist to lead the offense, while Kiera Kelly had five caused turnovers to lead the defense.
CLOSING THE GAP
The 12-7 defeat to Canisius on Saturday was yet another indication of how much progress Quinnipiac has made under second-year head coach Tanya Kotowicz. A year ago, the Bobcats lost 10-4 to Marist in the regular season, 17-5 to Fairfield and 22-4 to Canisius, a combined margin of defeat of 36 goals in the regular season. This season, Quinnipiac lost 8-7 to Marist, 11-10 in overtime to Fairfield, and 12-7 to Canisius, a combined margin of only seven. Out of conference, the Bobcats fell 21-3 to Yale last year and just 13-8 this season.
KUHN JOINS CENTURY CLUB
Junior attack Allison Kuhn recorded her 100th career point on Saturday against Canisius and now has 104 points (75 goals, 29 assists) heading into the regular season finale at Niagara. She is on pace to become only the ninth player in school history to record 100 career goals, as she stands 25 away at this stage of her junior year (with 30 goals scored this season).
KELLY AMONG BEST IN NATION
Heading into this weekend, senior defender Kiera Kelly is leading the nation in caused turnovers per game (3.53) and leading all defenders in ground balls per game (4.40), ranking second overall to USC goalie Gussie Johns (5.07). Kelly, who was the program's first-ever first-team All-ECAC selection a year ago, vaulted up the statistical charts after an eight-ground ball, seven-caused turnover performance at Monmouth on March 24, which earned her the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Award.
KELLY INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Senior defender Kiera Kelly has just about finished rewriting the defensive record books at Quinnipiac. In Saturday's game against Canisius, she became the new career record holder in ground balls with 210, passing the old mark of 208 set by Colleen Dooley '01. Kelly also added the single-season record for caused turnovers (48), passing the old mark of 45 set by Vanessa Miranda in 2004, and now stands with 53. Kelly already set the career caused turnover record earlier this season (113, previously held by Miranda) and is now at 149, and is second in ground balls for a single season with 66, but 18 away from the record of 84 set by Colleen Dooley in 2000.
BOBINSKI NAMED MAAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After her nine-point performance in a March 17 win over Gardner-Webb, sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski earned the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Award. Bobinski scored on all five of her shots and added four assists, surpassing her previous career high of eight points, which she set earlier this season against Saint Francis, Pa. (six goals, two assists).
BOBINSKI CLOSE TO 50-POINT SEASON
Sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski comes into the Niagara game with 48 points this season on 28 goals and 20 assists. She needs just two more to record the 19th 50-point season in program history. She is already one of only 12 Bobcats to record 20 assists in a season.
CONTI EARNS MAAC STUDENT-ATHLETE HONOR
Junior defender Aubrey Conti was named the MAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Week on April 4, an award which goes to an athlete who excels in the classroom and who had an impact performance over the previous week. Conti, who carries over a 3.9 GPA as an accounting major, helped the Quinnipiac defense hold Manhattan to only six goals in an 11-6 win on March 31, including two in the second half.
