NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. -- The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team fought to the end, but fell victim to another slow start as it dropped a 15-11 road decision at Niagara to conclude its 2018 season.
The Bobcats had a chance to qualify for the MAAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed with a win, but ended up on the outside looking in with a 5-11 overall record and a 1-7 mark in league play. Niagara improves to 8-8 overall and 5-2 in league play with the win.
Senior defender Kiera Kelly ended her Bobcats career with another spectacular defensive effort, tallying seven caused turnovers and four ground balls. The seven caused turnovers give her 60 on the season, shattering the old school record of 45, and will almost certainly result in her finishing the year as the NCAA's leader in that category. She came into the day averaging 3.53 caused turnovers per game to lead the nation, while two players were tied for second place with an even 3.0. Her 4.40 ground balls per game, meanwhile, placed her second in the country overall and first among defenders (the national leader is goalkeeper Gussie Johns of USC).
Offensively, Quinnipiac was led by junior attack Allison Kuhn, who had five goals on the day, giving her 35 on the season and 80 in her three-year career. Kuhn, who also led the Bobcats with five draw controls, is well ahead of pace to become only the ninth player in school history to score 100 career goals by the time her career ends next year. Freshman midfielder Avery Drouin had two goals, while four other Bobcats had one apiece.
For the fourth time in league play, the Bobcats fell into a hole of 5-0 (or worse), including both games this week. This time, the deficit came very quickly as Niagara scored five goals in a span of 8:54 to take the 5-0 lead with 21:06 still remaining in the first half.
Every time the Bobcats faced a big deficit this season, they fought their way back, and this time was no exception, as Quinnipiac closed to within 7-5 on back-to-back goals from Kuhn 1:01 apart, the second coming with 10:05 left in the half. After an exchange of goals left Quinnipiac down 9-7, Niagara scored the final goal of the half and the first three goals of the second half to stretch its lead to 13-7.
The Bobcats pulled within 15-11 with 2:04 remaining on goals from Kuhn and sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski 49 seconds apart and won the ensuing draw control, but were unable to get any closer.
