
Brian Moskey Drives Home 6 Runs, QU Baseball Defeats Gardner-Webb, 13-3, in Series Finale

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Quinnipiac baseball team avoided the weekend sweep against Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Runnin' Bulldogs 13-3. Early offense was once again key to the Bobcats victory, as they were able to put up 10 runs in the first two frames. That offense was spearheaded by Brian Moskey, who hit a grand slam, a triple, and had 6 RBI. The Bobcat bats were supported nicely by Tyler Poulin, who threw five shutout innings in the victory.

NOTES
- The Bobcat offense would get going early, putting up five runs in the top of the first.
- Sophomore Andre Marrero singled to left to leadoff the contest, and then classmates Dylan Lutz (walk) and Evan Vulgamore (infield single) would reach to load the bases.
- Junior Brian Moskey would step to the plate next and clear the bases with a grand slam sent over the left field fence, giving the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.
- The home run was Moskey's first of the season and the fifth home run for Quinnipiac in 2018. It was the second grand slam of the campaign, the first coming off the bat of Vulgamore against William & Mary on February 24th.
- Later in the inning, senior Ben Gibson would launch a solo shot with two outs to give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead. He leads the team with a pair of homers on the season.
- In the top of the second, Quinnipiac would benefit from four Gardner-Webb errors to put up another five spot.
- The Bobcats scored all of their second inning runs with two outs.
- Sophomore Derek Kasperzyk reached on an error to begin the frame, and he would be sent to third by a Vulgamore two-out single.
- Moskey would then lay down a squeeze bunt and force an error on a rushed throw by the third baseman. Kasperzyk would score and Vulgamore would advance to third on the play.
- Junior Liam Scafariello would then single home Vulgamore to give the Bobcats a 7-0 lead.
- Freshman Ian Ostberg and Gibson would then both reach base on errors. Moskey and Scafariello would come around to score on those plays.
- Senior Anthony Cruz drove home Ostberg with a single to center field, giving Quinnipiac a 10-0 lead, before the inning ended.
- Junior Tyler Poulin got the start on the bump for the Bobcats. He went five shutout innings and collected eight strikeouts, including four in a row from the third inning to the end of the fourth.
- Poulin becomes the first Bobcat with multiple victories in 2018. He currently owns a 2-1 record with a 1.20 ERA.
- In the top of the fifth, Moskey would send a pitch to the base of the right-center field fence for a two-out triple to plate Kasperzyk and Kevin Huscher, who walked after pinch hitting for Vulgamore.
- Brian Moskey became the first Bobcat to drive home six runs in a game since Vincent Guglietti did so in the season finale of the 2013 season (May 18).
- Cruz would add another run with a double in the eighth inning that would plate Scafariello.
- Junior Kevin Huscher picked up his first hit of 2018 with a single in the ninth.
- Senior Chris Enns pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Quinnipiac, and he was followed in relief by freshman Robert Lewis, who made his debut for the Bobcats this afternoon. Lewis threw a 1-2-3 8th inning, collecting his first collegiate punch-out.
- Senior Mike Davis finished up the game for the Bobcats. He allowed one run on one hit, and also had a strikeout.
- Quinnipiac, as a team, batted .444 (8-for-18) with two outs and .400 (6-for-15) with runners in scoring position.
- Cruz led the Bobcats with three hits on the afternoon. Other players with multi-hit games were Gibson, Lutz, Moskey, and Vulgamore.
