
QU Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep at Saint Peter's With DI Record 28 Runs

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey - The Quinnipiac baseball team completed the three-game sweep of Saint Peter's on Saturday, winning both ends of the twin bill (4-0, 28-2). In Game 1, graduate student Brandon Shileikis threw the team's first complete game shutout of the season, leading the Bobcats to a 4-0 victory. In the series finale, junior Tyler Poulin picked up the victory, allowing only one run in six innings of work.
Quinnipiac's offense exploded in the second game Saturday afternoon, led by sophomore Evan Vulgamore who hit three home runs. Senior Ben Gibson who smashed a pair of three-run home runs, freshman Frank Cascio hit his first collegiate home run, and junior Liam Scafariello was 4-for-4 with a homer and five RBI. The Bobcats would take home a 28-2 win, setting a Division I record for runs in a single game. The previous mark was 24, which Quinnipiac set against Wagner in 2003. This was the first time that the Bobcats scored more than 20 runs since they scored exactly 20 against LIU Brooklyn in 2007.

The Bobcats travel in-state to Central Connecticut State University for a game on Tuesday before returning to MAAC action. First pitch for Tuesday's game is slated for 3:00 p.m.

GAME 1 NOTES
- Graduate student Brandon Shileikis collected eight strikeouts and allowed only four hits in his complete game shutout performance.
- Shileikis was very efficient on Saturday afternoon, only needing 88 pitches to complete seven innings (63 strikes). He now has three wins on the season with a 3.35 ERA and has thrown the most innings of any Quinnipiac pitcher in 2018 (43 IP).
- The scoring began early for the Bobcats, as sophomore Dylan Lutz singled home classmate Andre Marrero, who reached on a leadoff double, in the top of the first inning.
- In the top of the 2nd, freshman Ian Ostberg brought home junior Kyle Horton with a sacrifice fly, making it a 2-0 game.
- Quinnipiac would score its final two runs of Game 1 in the top of the next frame. Senior Ben Gibson knocked home junior Liam Scafariello with a one-out double after Scafariello reached on a base on balls.
- Sophomore Evan Vulgamore stepped to the plate next and smoked a double of his own that would score Gibson, bringing the score to 4-0.
- Quinnipiac scored their runs in bunches in Game 2, scoring three runs in the 2nd, seven runs in the 3rd, five runs in the 5th, two runs in the 7th, four runs in the 8th, and three runs in the 9th.
- Senior Anthony Cruz led off the top of the 2nd inning with a walk, stole second, and then was able to advance to third on a balk.
- Junior Brian Moskey drove home Cruz with an RBI single, and then he was able to steal second base and advance to third on a balk.
- Ostberg plated Moskey with an RBI single of his own, making the score 2-0.
- Lutz scored Ostberg with a one-out double to left center field to conclude the scoring that inning.
- In the third inning, the Bobcats scored their seven runs on only four hits.
- Vulgamore got things started with a walk and Anthony Cruz would hit a single to send him to second. Both would advance to scoring position on a double steal.
- The stolen bases set up Moskey for an RBI opportunity, and he brought home both runners with a two-RBI single to center field. Lutz would drive home Moskey and Horton with a single after they advanced to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Ostberg.
- Scafariello would walk and then he and Lutz would execute the double steal and found themselves in scoring position. Gibson stepped to the plate and sent one over the fence for a three run home run, bringing the score to 10-0 after three innings.
- In the fifth inning, Scafariello singled home a run after Marrero and Lutz hit back-to-back singles to begin the frame.
- Gibson then launched his second three-run homer of the day, bringing the score to 14-0.
- Vulgamore, the next batter up, also sent one out of the park, increasing the Bobcat lead.
- In the seventh inning, freshman Frank Cascio hit his first home run as a Bobcat, a two run shot that brought the lead to 17-0.
- In the top of the eighth, a pair of two-run homers would add to the Quinnipiac lead. Scafariello launched a pitch over the left center fence to bring the score to 19-1 Two batters later, after a Gibson double, Vulgamore would leave the yard for the second time, making the score 21-1.
- In the top of the ninth, Lutz drove home a run with an RBI single.
- Scafariello scored a pair with a double, making it a 24-2 game.
- Vulgamore hit his third home run in three straight at bats, this one a three-run blast, in the ninth to bring the game to 27-2.
- Senior Julius Saporito sent home the Bobcats final run of the afternoon with an RBI double.
- Anthony Cruz, Liam Scafariello, and Dylan Lutz each had four hits in the game. Ben Gibson, Evan Vulgamore, and Ian Ostberg each had three. The Bobcats as a team had 27 hits.
- Junior Tyler Poulin allowed only two hits and one run while striking out nine batters in six innings of work to pick up his third win of the season.
- He leads the Bobcats with 42 strikeouts and owns a 3.13 ERA for the year.
