HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac baseball team plays its first home contest after 17 road games to start the year when it welcomes Yale for a 3 p.m. contest on Tuesday at Quinnipiac Baseball Field. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was moved up a day to avoid inclement weather in the forecast for Wednesday.
HOME AT LAST (BUT ONLY BRIEFLY)
The Quinnipiac baseball team has played 17 straight road games to start the 2018 season, but will finally get to break out the home whites when it entertains Yale on Tuesday. The beginning of the season has seen the Bobcats playing in Texas, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. After facing Yale, though, the Bobcats are back on the road for nine straight road games before returning home on April 7.
HEAD COACH JOHN DELANEY
Head Coach John Delaney returns for his fourth season at the helm with Quinnipiac baseball. He has amassed 70 wins in his three-plus years as head coach. Qunnipiac won 29 games in 2015, which ties the program record for most wins in a single season. The Bobcats went 29-27 (15-9 MAAC) overall that year, finishing No. 3 in the conference standings - their highest regular-season finish in the conference since finishing No. 1 in 2007, when Delaney played for the team.
LAST MEETING WITH YALE
Quinnipiac last met its neighboring rival in 2016, with the Bulldogs coming away with an 8-6 win at Quinnipiac Baseball Field. Current senior Ben Gibson hit a two-run homer for the Bobcats, who fell behind 8-1 and couldn't quite come all the way back. Current senior Brandon Shileikis (2.2 innings) and current junior Christian Nicolosi (2.0) combined for 4.2 innings of shutout relief to help the Bobcats get back in it.
MAAC PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac baseball was picked to finish 8th in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on February 7, 2018. The Bobcats were placed between Siena and Rider. Marist was slated to finish 1st, garnering seven first-place votes, with Canisius, Fairfield, and Niagara rounding out the top four.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Yale comes in at 3-11 on the season after going 1-2 at Richmond's tournament this weekend with a win over MAAC foe Monmouth. The Bulldogs also went 1-2 in a series at Virginia with an 11-4 win sandwiched around two one-run losses. Tim DeGraw leads Yale with a .339 average while Griffin Dey is hitting .321 with four home runs and 11 RBI. Lefty Kumar Nambiar is 2-0 with a 3.81 ERA to lead the pitching staff.
MOSKEY CONSISTENCY
Quinnipiac's leading hitter so far this year is junior outfielder Brian Moskey (.369), who was named the MAAC Player of the Week after a six-RBI game against Gardner-Webb. Moskey has been a frequent visitor to the basepaths this season, as he has reached via a hit or a walk in 16 of 17 games, with the only exception an 0-3 day against Old Dominion, which snapped a 10-game hitting streak. Moskey had multi-hit efforts in six of those 10 games, including a 3-for-4 effort against William & Mary. He also had a 4-for-4 day against the College of Charleston on Wednesday.
A LITTLE EXTRA
Junior designated hitter Liam Scafariello has made the most of his swings this season. Scafariello leads the team in RBI with 15, thanks to 10 of his 14 hits going for extra bases (seven doubles, one triple, two homers). A year ago, Scafariello had 16 home runs, tying the school's Division I record.
FRESHMEN STEP UP ON THE MOUND
Quinnipiac pulled off an impressive two-game sweep of Charleston last weekend after the Cougars came into the series with a 13-3 record. On Tuesday, freshman reliever Joe Preciado threw the final three innings without allowing a run to get the win, as the Bobcats came back for a 6-5 win. In the second game of the series, freshman Robert Lewis got the start and allowed one run over five innings, while fellow freshman Arthur Correiro came on to throw two innings of no-hit relief.
NEXT UP
The Quinnipiac baseball team will head to Stony Brook this weekend for a three-game series.
