HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer is set to host the 2018 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Soccer Stadium, squaring off with No. 5 Rider with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
The contest will be a rematch of the 2016 MAAC Championship, as No. 2 Rider defeated No. 1 Quinnipiac in Hamden by the final score of 3-1 on Nov. 11, 2016.

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer is set to host the 2018 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Soccer Stadium, squaring off with No. 5 Rider with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
The contest will be a rematch of the 2016 MAAC Championship, as No. 2 Rider defeated No. 1 Quinnipiac in Hamden by the final score of 3-1 on Nov. 11, 2016.
LAST TIME OUT: MAAC SEMIFINALS vs. Marist
- The Bobcats topped No. 3 Marist in thrilling fashion on Thursday afternoon from the Quinnipiac Soccer Stadium in Hamden, besting the Red Foxes in penalty kicks to advance to the 2018 MAAC Championships.
- Quinnipiac defeated Marist 8-7 in 10 rounds of penalty kicks, moving to 10-5-3 (8-1-1 MAAC) so far this season.
- Goalkeeper Jared Mazzola (Kahtonah, N.Y.) turned in an impressive performance for Quinnipiac, making seven total saves throughout the contest before stopping three shots in the round of penalty kicks to help the Bobcats advance.
- Mazzola also stopped a Red Foxes penalty kick attempt with just over two minutes left in the second half. After the Bobcats got called for a foul inside the box, Mazzola made a diving save to his right side to keep the game tied in the 108th minute and help force penalty kicks.
- Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn.), Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Jeppe Haehre (Baerums Verk, Norway) all scored for the Bobcats. Quinnipiac trailed 2-0 in the first half of action before coming back to force overtime and penalty kicks.
WINNING WAYS
- With a semifinal win on Thursday over Marist, The Bobcats have now advanced to the final round of the MAAC Championships in three of the last six years under Head Coach Eric Da Costa. Quinnipiac has made a postseason appearance in nine of the last 11 seasons.
- The program has now appeared in the MAAC Tournament semifinal round in each of the last three years. The Bobcats have qualified for the postseason in each of the last seven years, and nine of the last 11.
- The No. 5 Broncs went 6-4-0 in league play this season, then bested No. 4 Iona and No. 1 Fairfield in a pair of postseason road wins to advance to the final round.
- Rider is led offensively by Elliot Otmani, who has seven goals and 10 assists for 24 points this year. Pablo DeCastro has also recorded seven goals to go along with one helper for 15 points.
- The Bobcats defeated Rider, 2-1, in the matchup between the two program's this year in Hamden. Eamon Whelan scored twice in the final 10 minutes of action to help Quinnipiac earn the comeback win.
- Quinnipiac head coach Eric Da Costa is in his 14th season at the helm of the Bobcats' program, becoming the longest tenured men's soccer coach in Quinnipiac's NCAA history.
- With the win on Sept. 26 at Canisius, Da Costa secured his 100th career victory as the Bobcats' head coach. He now has 108 total wins in his career at Quinnipiac.
- Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Conn.) has scored 13 goals in Quinnipiac's 18 matches, the most of any MAAC player in 2018.
- Whelan was the unanimous choice for the league's Offensive Player of the Year award, and is Quinnipiac's first MAAC Offensive Player of the Year since the Bobcats joined the league in 2013.
- The junior led the MAAC in points (27), points per game (1.69), goals (12), and goals per game (0.75) during the regular season. Whelan, a two-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week in 2018, was also selected to the All-MAAC First Team.
- He scored eight goals in league play, tallying a goal in seven of 10 conference contests. Whelan enters Thursday's MAAC semifinal contest having recorded a point in eight of the last 10 games.
- Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn.) has now played in 78 career contests, which ranks tied for fifth in Quinnipiac program history.
- Dally joined Whelan as an All-MAAC First Team selection, recording five goals and six assists in 2018 to finish second on the team in total scoring (16 points). Dally recorded 15 points (five goals, five assists) in conference play.
- The senior has recorded a point in five of his last six games.
- Jarred Mazzola (Katonah, N.Y.) has started 13 of the last 15 games in net for the Bobcats, earning a win in 10 of his last 11 starts.
- The goalkeeper has posted a 0.88 goals-against average in his first year with the program, which ranks No. 10 all-time in the MAAC for a single season. Mazzola is 9-3-1 in total, recording four shutouts for the Bobcats.
- Quinnipiac men's soccer junior forward Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Conn.) has been tabbed 2018 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, the league office announced on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
- The Bobcats earned five awards in total, three All-MAAC First Team honorees (Eamon Whelan, Rashawn Dally, Jeppe Haehre) and two All-Rookie Team selections (Dejan Duric, Jordon Bennett).
- 10 Quinnipiac student-athletes were also named to the All-Academic squad: Christian Casagranda, Oscar Evans, Colton Grob, Simon Hillinger, Chrysostomos Iakovidis, Griffin Kutzner, Derek Parker, Griffin Scaglia, Paulo Soares and Eamon Whelan. The Bobcats finished with the second-highest total number of student-athletes to make the list. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must finish at least two semesters at their institution and must hold at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.

- Junior Conor McCoy (Newry, Northern Ireland) was named to the 2018 Preseason All-MAAC Team, the conference announced on Aug. 14.
- The Bobcats were picked to finish fourth by the league's head coaches.
- Quinnipiac head coach Eric Da Costa named the program's leadership council for 2018, which includes senior Derek Parker (Cromwell, Conn.), senior Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland), junior Conor McCoy (Newry, Northern Ireland), sophomore Paulo Soares (Quincy, MA), and sophomore Simon Hillinger (Ditzingen, Germany).
- Quinnipiac went 8-9-2 (6-2-0 MAAC) in 2017, earning the No. 5 seed in the 2017 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship.
- The Bobcats defeated No. 4 Manhattan in the MAAC Tournament quarterfinals, then fell in penalty kicks at No. 1 Fairfield in the semifinal round.
- The program returns three student-athletes that earned All-MAAC honors in 2017. Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn.) and Conor McCoy (Newry, Northern Ireland) were named to the All-MAAC Second Team, and freshman Paulo Soares (Quincy, MA) was named to the All-MAAC Rookie Team.
