HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team returns to action this weekend with another set of games, including the final home game of the 2018 season Friday afternoon to celebrate the Class of 2019.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac hosted Providence last Friday before traveling to Yale to face the Bulldogs on Sunday. The Bobcats opened the weekend with a tough 6-2 loss to the Friars with goals from Amanda Blum and Valerie Perkins before Brooke Whipkey scored the only goal in a 3-1 loss at Yale.
Scouting Old Dominion
The Monarchs come into the weekend with a 9-5 record and are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the BIG EAST standings. Old Dominion has won two straight games heading into this weekend, beating Temple last Friday on the road before taking down American, 1-0, on Sunday. Erin Huffman and Rebecca Birch are tied for the team lead with nine goals while Huffman has two more assists to give her a team-high 22 points. Alexandria Brewer has dished the ball well with seven assists. The Monarchs have three solid goalkeepers led by Lacey Frazier's 0.90 GAA, allowing five goals and making eight saves in five starts. Senior Kealsie Robles has a team-high 29 saves in six starts.
All-Time Against Old Dominion
The Bobcats are 1-3 all-time against the Monarchs dating back to their first meeting in 2013. Quinnipiac's lone win against Old Dominion came in 2016 in overtime, 3-2, which also serves as Quinnipiac's last win against a ranked opponent.
Scouting Sacred Heart
The Pioneers own a 7-8-0 record on the season with a 1-2 record in conference play. Sacred Heart has lost six of its last seven starts. Last weekend, the Pioneers fell to 10th in the national standings. Sacred Heart is led by Colleen McAninley with six goals and 15 points while Allie Brouhard, Kelsy Hopkins and Makenna Crawford are tied for second with four goals. Brouhard and Hopkins are also tied for the team-lead with three assists.
All-Time Against Sacred Heart
Quinnipiac is 19-11 all-time against Sacred Heart as the two teams meet for the first time since the 2015 season when each team was a member the MAAC. The Bobcats won that previous meeting, 3-2, back on Oct. 16, 2019.
Vs. Cancer
Friday marks the Bobcats first Vs. Cancer game as they have partnered up with the foundation to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer. Quinnipiac field hockey has a goal of raising $1,000 by the end of the season. The organization was founded in 2013 by a former college baseball player who was diagnosed with cancer as a college freshman.
Senior Day
With the final home game of the season comes senior day celebrations as the Bobcats honor their five seniors for their contributions to the program: Rachel Hamm, Elisa Ruiz Martinez, Bianka Strubbe, Hannah Teicher and Anna Walmsley.
Senior Leader
Ruiz Martinez was honored this week as she was selected to the 2018 Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Senior Game slated for Nov. 16 following the NCAA National Semifinal games. She was one of four BIG EAST players selected and also gave Quinnipiac a selection for a fourth straight season. She has a goal and an assist this season and has logged 70 minutes eight times this season.
Perkisize
Valerie Perkins scored her second goal of the season last Friday as the Bobcats tried to chip away at the Providence lead. It was her first goal since scoring at Vermont in the second game of the season and has now scored six goals in her career.
Part of History
Elisa van Winkel tallied an assist on Perkins' goal for her 10th point of the season to tie Makayla Adams for the team lead. van Winkel joins Adams as the first freshman since Danielle Allan '15 in 2011 to score 10 points. It is the first time that two freshman have recorded 10 points in a season in at least the past 12 seasons.
Major Key
Brooke Whipkey continued her hot play as of late as she scored at Yale to give her a goal in three of her last four games as well as four of the last seven. With her great play, Whipkey moved into a tie with van Winkel and Perkins for the most goals (4) and points (10) on the team this season.
In Blum
Amanda Blum heated up this past weekend as she tallied points in back-to-back games for the first time in her career. After scored her first goal a month ago, Blum scored once again in the Bobcats loss to Providence before feeding Brooke Whipkey a pass for her second assist. Blum has the second most goals (2) and points (6) on the team.
Helping Out
In her first start as a midfielder this season, Jess Halley made an impact as she recorded an assist on Blum's goal against Providence for her second assist of the season. Halley previously picked up her first career point at Columbia on Aug. 31.
Leading the Way
Hannah Teicher boosted her season-save total to 45 last Friday against Providence as she made three saves. Teicher has started 11 games this season after making just one other start in her career.
What a Save
Alicia Galasso had an impressive performance at Yale on Sunday as she made seven saves in just her fourth game and second career start. Galasso had not made a start in the season-opener against Boston College. Galasso has 25 saves in her four appearances, including 16 over her last two games played.
