HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team returns to action with a pair of games in the weekend for the first time in three weeks as the Bobcats host Providence in BIG EAST action Friday afternoon before making the short trip to Yale for a Sunday matinee.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac fell in a heartbreaker last Friday afternoon at Villanova, 2-1, with Brooke Whipkey netting her third goal of the season. The Bobcats and Wildcats were scoreless at halftime before Villanova scored a pair of second half goals. The Bobcats scored with just under three minutes left in the half but could not cap off the comeback attempt.
Scouting Providence
The Friars have played well as of late, winning four of their last five matches. Providence's lone loss in that stretch as a 3-0 loss at against UConn. Providence has three shutouts in the last six games, including a 1-0 overtime win vs. Villanova. Last time out, the Friars took down the Fairfield Stags at home, 2-1. Allyson Parker leads the team with 16 points on six goals and four assists while Izzy Mendez is tied for the team lead with six goals. In goal, Lydia Rice is 8-5-0 with a 1.49 GAA and a .729 save percentage.
Scouting Yale
The Bulldogs come into the weekend with losses in three of their last four games and a record of 5-6 on the season. Last weekend, Yale picked up its first Ivy League win with a 1-0 shutout of Cornell before falling at Bucknell, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Imogen Davies led the Bulldogs with five goals and 11 points while Bridget Condie is second on the team with three goals and three assists for nine points. Goalkeeper Sydney Terroso has played all 784:43 in goal for Yale, tallying a 2.41 GAA and .710 save percentage.
Professor Appreciation Day
Quinnipiac field hockey is hosting its first annual Professor Appreciation Day where members of the team invited their favorite professors to join them on the walk out to the field during the line-up introductions. This year, 12 professors will join the Bobcats on the field from a wide array of academic programs.
National Leader
Midfielder Ines Ruiz Martinez (Madrid, Spain) continues to be among the best in the nation on the defensive side of the ball as she is tied for first in the country with five defensive saves. She was recently joined at the top of the national leaderboard as Temple's Dani Batze and James Madison's Megan Guzzardi also have five defensive saves. As a team, Quinnipiac is tied for third with seven on the season. This is not the first time the Bobcats have had a national leader in defensive saves as former Bobcat Angie King '17 totaled 13 defensive saves as a senior and was crowned the statistical champion.
Brooke Party
Brooke Whipkey (Charlotte, North Carolina) continued her hot stretch of play at Villanova last Friday as the sophomore tallied her third goal of the season and second in as many games. Whipkey has scored all three of her goals in the last five games after tallying her first career goal vs. Brown on Sept. 16.
Making Saves
Hannah Teicher (Bethesda, Maryland) made three more saves Friday as she anchored the Bobcats defense and held the Wildcats scoreless in the first half. Teicher 42 saves on the season, her first as the team's starting goalkeeper.
Offensive Attack
The Bobcats tied their season-high for total shots last Friday as the Bobcats peppered 14 shots on the Villanova defense. The Bobcats previously had 14 at Vermont in their second game of the season. As a team, the Bobcats 99 shots and average nine shots per game.
Ready to Score
Makayla Adams (Sweet Valley, Pennsylvania) remains the Bobcats top threat as she still leads the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists. She is the first Quinnipiac freshman since Danielle Allan '15 in 2011 to record at least 10 points in her first season with the program. Fellow freshman Elisa van Winkel (Heeze, Netherlands) is second on the team with four goals and nine points while Whipkey is third with three goals and eight points.
