
QU Volleyball Drops Five-Setter To Toledo, Falls 3-0 To SIU Edwardsville

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Toledo volleyball team earned a 15-10 win in the fifth set to take a 3-2 victory over Quinnipiac in the first match of the day, and SIU Edwardsville clinched the tournament title with a 3-0 win over the Bobcats in the day's second match at the Fort Wayne Invitational Presented by Hyatt Place on Saturday at the Gates Sports Complex. Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J. - pictured) led the Bobcats in kills in both matches with 17 against Toledo and nine against SIU Edwardsville.

- Quinnipiac dropped its second straight five-set match to start the season after falling to Fort Wayne on Friday in its season opener 3-2.
- The Bobcats won the first set 25-23, when junior outside hitter Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) had back-to-back kills after Toledo rallied late to tie the score 23-23 with a 6-0 run.
- Quinnipiac forced the match into a fifth set after winning the fourth 25-21. The Bobcats used a 9-0 run midway through the set to take a 20-12 lead. Junior right side hitter Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) had two aces during the run, while freshman middle hitter Gabby Horman (Smithtown, N.Y.) had a kill and a block for back-to-back points.
- Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J.) had a team-high 17 kills, one shy of her career best set last season
- Miller had her second straight double-double to start the season with 13 kills and a team-high 16 digs.
- Senior middle hitter Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) had eight kills and a team-high six blocks in her second collegiate match in her home state of Indiana.
- Freshman setter Morgan Sherwin (Coplay, Pa.) led the Bobcats in assists for her second straight match with 22, while sophomore setter Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) added 18.

- SIU Edwardsville completed the Fort Wayne Invitational with a perfect 3-0 record to win the tournament title, also earning a 3-2 win over Toledo and a 3-1 win over host Fort Wayne.
- After trailing 11-4 in the second set, the Bobcats rallied with a 10-3 run to tie it 14-14. Freshman middle hitter Gabby Horman (Smithtown, N.Y.) keyed the run with three blocks in a span of four straight points, combining twice with junior right side hitter Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) and once with sophomore outside hitter Natalie Alechko (Whitehouse Station, N.J.). SIU Edwardsville answered back with the next four points and went on to a 25-19 win and a 2-0 lead.
- SIU Edwardsville had a 10-0 run early in the third set to take a 13-1 lead, with three of the points coming on service aces from Jackie Scott.
- Alechko led the Bobcats in kills for the second straight match with nine, while Horman finished with a team-high five blocks and sophomore setter Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) had 24 assists.
- Quinnipiac led the nation last year with an 18-win improvement over the previous year (three wins to 21). Notre Dame was second (15) and SIU Edwardsville was one of three teams tied for third with a 14-win improvement.
