FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Fort Wayne fought off two match points in the fifth set and tallied the final three points to earn a 3-2 win over Quinnipiac in the season opener for both teams at the Fort Wayne Invitational Presented by Hyatt Place on Friday evening at the Gates Sports Complex.

NOTES
- Junior Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H. - pictured) had seven of her team-high 15 kills in the fifth set, the seventh of which gave Quinnipiac a 14-13 lead.
- Coffey started off the fifth set with four straight kills to help the Bobcats to a 5-0 lead, before Fort Wayne answered with five straight to tie it. Neither team ever led by more than one point until the Mastodons finished off a 3-0 run for a 17-15 win to end it.
- After Fort Wayne won the first set 25-20, Quinnipiac closed out the second set on an 8-2 run to level the match at 1-1 the Bobcats trailed by as many as five at 17-12 before rallying for the final four points to take the set. An ace from Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) made it 24-32, and after a Fort Wayne timeout, Natalie Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J.) finished it off with a kill.
- Freshman middle hitter Gabby Horman (Smithtown, N.Y.) earned the start in her first collegiate match and had five hills in 11 attempts
- Senior middle hitter Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) was playing in her home state for the first time in her college career and had eight kills and fa team-high our blocks.
- Quinnipiac trailed 21-20 in the third but came back for a 25-23 win. Miller started a 4-0 run with a kill and an ace and freshman Morgan Sherwin (Coplay, Pa.) had a kill to make the score 24-21. After Fort Wayne won two straight points, a Fort Wayne service error gave the Bobcats a 2-1 win
- Fort Wayne used a 10-1 run in the fourth set to turn a 10-9 deficit into a 19-11 lead and went on to a 25-16 win to extend the match to a fifth set.
- Sherwin led Quinnipiac with 21 assists in her college debut, splitting setter duties with sophomore Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), who had 17 assists
