QU Baseball Falls To Central Connecticut State, 6-3

NEW BRITAIN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac University baseball team came alive late but their come-back bid fell short in a 6-3 loss to Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Connecticut. The Bobcats drop to 10-15 overall while CCSU improves to 13-11 on the season.
Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York) extended his on-base streak to 11 games with a double in the top of the ninth that keyed a three-run inning. Liam Scafariello (Southington, Connecticut) blasted his 11th home run of the season and became the 11th player in Quinnipiac history to reach the mark in a season. Scafariello is now tied for eighth in single-season home runs with Vin Siena '86, Bryan Sabatella '05 and Randy Gress '06. Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) also extended his hitting streak to three games and is currently batting .455 (5-for-9) in his last three appearances.
In the third, Quinnipiac put the first run of the game on the board when Mike Palladino's (Rockville Centre, New York) sacrifice fly ball plated Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Massachusetts) to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Cruz reached base on a fielder's choice before stealing second base and moving to third on a single by Derek Kasperzyk (Killingworth, Connecticut). Palladino then skied one to center field to score Cruz.
An error in the bottom half of the inning resulted in a pair of runs for Central Connecticut State to take a 2-1 lead. Quinnipiac starter Alex Vargas (New York, New York) had held CCSU hitless through three innings before the Blue Devils struck for three runs powered by a pair of doubles to take a 5-1 lead. In ended Vargas' day in favor of Blake DeCarr (Foxboro, Massachusetts). Vargas left after allowing five runs – three earned – on three hits over four innings. DeCarr last two innings, scattering a hit while holding CCSU scoreless.
Central Connecticut struck again in the seventh, tagging Quinnipiac reliever Mike DellaMedaglia (Somers, New York) with an unearned run after a pair of errors made it 6-1. Gregory Egan (Seldon, New York) then worked his way through a scoreless eighth after allowing a lead-off single before striking out two of the next three batters he faced.
In the ninth, Palladino doubled to lead off the inning before moving to third on a ground-out to the right side by Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut). After Joseph Burns was retired, Scafariello turned on one and blasted it over the left field fence to cut Central Connecticut's lead to 6-3.
Quinnipiac is back in action this weekend when it travels to Niagara Falls, New York to take on Niagara University in a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series set for Apr. 8-9.
