BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior goalie Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.) had 16 saves in his final collegiate game and sophomore attack Foster Cuomo (Oakville, Ontario) had three goals and three assists, but the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team came up short 10-6 at Canisius in the season finale for the Bobcats on Friday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex.
The game concludes the careers of Quinnipiac's four seniors – Brust, attack Drew D'Antonio (Norwalk, Conn.) and midfielders Kevin Diehl (Towson, Md.) and Zach Malsky (Glastonbury, Conn.), although Malsky has another year of eligibility left if he chooses to use it. The Class of 2017 was responsible for bringing Quinnipiac its first ever MAAC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament bid as juniors last year.
Quinnipiac trailed 6-3 at the half, with Cuomo scoring all three goals for the Bobcats in the first quarter, and started the second half two men down after two penalties in the closing seconds of the second quarter. Brust began the second half with three saves on the EMO to keep it a three goal game and Foster had assists to freshmen Tyler DeVito (Amawalk, Conn.) and Tyler Mackay (Oakville, Ont.) to close the lead to 6-5 with 3:00 left in the third quarter.
Canisius stemmed the momentum on a fortuitous break 23 seconds later as Mario Caito scored when his shot was deflected, popped up in the air, and dropped in over the head of Brust. The Bobcats answered, though, in the final seconds of the third quarter, forcing a turnover and getting a transition goal from sophomore Mike Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) with 4.2 seconds left to make the score 7-6.
The Bobcats had numerous chances to tie the game, as Brust made four huge saves in the fourth quarter to keep it a one-goal game. However, with Cuomo, DeVito and starting midfielder Matt Frost (Spring Lake, N.J.) all nursing injuries on the sidelines, Quinnipiac was unable to convert and the Golden Griffins scored three times in the final 2:49 against a scrambling Quinnipiac defense to seal it.
Brust was the Most Outstanding Player of last year's MAAC Tournament, when he had 18 saves against Canisius in the semifinals (a 13-7 win) and finished this afternoon's game with a season-high 16. Junior Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.), who was moved to midfield for the first time this season, was held scoreless, ending his goal-scoring streak at 20 games.
Quinnipiac returns almost its entire roster next season as it looks to return to the form that earned it last year's MAAC title. Freshman Joe Zukauskas (Southington, Conn.) earned three starts in goal this season while Brust was injured and will look to fill the most significant void the Bobcats will have after this season.
