
QU Women's Tennis Wins Fourth-Straight MAAC Regular Season Title After 6-1 Win over Marist

Bobcats Secure No. 1 Seed in MAAC Tournament
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Quinnipiac women's tennis team clinched its fourth straight MAAC regular-season championship after it defeated Marist on the road, 6-1 on Monday, April 24.
With the win, the Bobcats improved to 12-8 (7-0 MAAC), while Marist fell to 8-6 (5-2 MAAC). The win clinched Quinnipiac's fourth straight MAAC regular season title, which secures the Bobcats position as the No. 1 seed heading into the MAAC Tournament.
Including tournament matches, the win moved the Bobcats to 36-0 against MAAC competition since coming to the new league from the NEC in the 2013-14 season.
Quinnipiac maintained dominance in the conference this season, losing only three points total out of 49 match points in MAAC competition this year.
Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida), Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California), Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut), Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) all won two matches on the day.
The day began with the No. 3 doubles match, where the dup of Lu and Rodriguez defeated Amy Galloway and Elizabeth Brozovich, 6-2. The win was the duo's ninth win of the season, preserving their undefeated record of 9-0 since becoming a team. Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Rencheli followed in the No. 2 doubles match and clinched the doubles point for Quinnipiac, with a 6-4 win over Callie Morlock and Claire Schmitz. The win was the senior duo's ninth in a row as well, keeping them undefeated at 9-0.
Young and Horton closed doubles play with a 6-4 win over Ariel Shulman and Sophia Moeller. The win secured the doubles sweep and was the duo's 24th win of the season, which is tops on the team.
The Bobcats came out on fire in singles play, winning five straight matches to secure its fourth straight regular season title. Young came out in the No. 4 match and swept Morlock in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1. The win brought Young's season total to 42 wins, which exceeds her previous career-high in a season of 41 wins, which she did in her freshman campaign.
Rencheli followed with a win in the No. 1 singles match over Shulman, 6-1 and 6-0 in straight sets. The win was her fifth straight singles win in a row. Lu clinched the match and regular season championship with her win over Schmitz in the No. 2 singles match, 6-3 and 6-1 in straight sets.
Rodriguez then took the court in the No. 5 singles match against Galloway, sweeping her in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2. The win was her fifth in a row in singles play, which ties her with Rencheli for longest active win streak on the team. The win also brought Rodriguez's season total to 41, making her the first freshman since Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) to record 40 wins in their rookie campaign.
Horton followed with a 6-0 and 6-0 sweep of Moeller in the No. 3 singles match to win her 40th win of the season. It is the second season in a row where Horton recorded at least 40 wins, as she earned a career-high 47 wins in her junior season.
The duel concluded with the No. 6 singles match where Lohaphaisan went to three sets with Brozovich. Lohaphaisan took the first set, 7-5, but dropped the final two sets, 6-4 and 10-8.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday, April 29, as the No. 1 seed Quinnipiac women's tennis team will take on the No. 4 seed Fairfield Stags in the MAAC Tournament at 10 a.m. at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey.
