
Layla Rodriguez Wins Two Matches in QU Women's Tennis' 4-3 Loss Against Fordham

NEW YORK, New York - The Quinnipiac women's tennis team fell in a road non-conference duel against a stout Fordham team, 4-3, Thursday afternoon.
The loss snaps Quinnipiac's five-game win-streak, moving its record to 10-8 (5-0 MAAC), while Fordham improves to 18-2.
Freshman Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) earned two victories on the day, increasing her season win total to 37, which is second most wins on the team.
The day began with the No. 1 doubles match, where Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) and Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) narrowly fell to Estelle Wong and Carina Ma, 7-5. Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) and Rodriguez bounced back in the No. 2 match to defeat Alexis Zobediah and Mayu Sato, 7-5. The win preserved the duo's undefeated streak on the season, giving them a 6-0 record since joining forces.
Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) had the chance to secure the doubles point in the No. 3 doubles match against Maia Balce and Carolina Sa. The Bobcats' duo succeeded, defeating the Fordham duo, 7-6 (6), giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Fordham tied the match after Wong defeated Horton in the No. 2 singles match in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1. Then Fordham took a 2-1 lead after Lu fell to Ma in the No. 1 match, 6-2 and 6-1 in straight sets. Amy Zammarieh (Trumbull, Connecticut) tied the match at 2-2 after she defeated Destiny Grunin in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2.
Fordham retook the lead after Gianna Insogna defeated Nicole Katzarkov (Coral Gables, Florida) in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1. Rodriguez came back to tie the match at 3-3 after she cruised past Sato in a sweeping 6-4 and 6-3 win, setting up the No. 3 singles match as a winner-takes-all match.
Young took the court against Balce in the rubber match and dropped a close first set, 7-6 (1). Young tried to mount a comeback in the second set, but fell just short, 7-5 to cement the narrow 4-3 Quinnipiac loss.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday, April 22, when Quinnipiac hits the road to take on MAAC rival Marist at 1 p.m. The Bobcats will then take on Monmouth in West Long Branch, New Jersey on Sunday at 11 a.m.
