Matthew Osieja breaks appearances record with 63rd trip to the mound

NEW ROCHELLE, New York - The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to Iona, 2-1, in the final game of their three-games series at Flowers Field at City Park. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 11-21 overall and 4-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while Iona moves to 12-13 overall and 5-4 in MAAC play.

Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, New Jersey) broke the Quinnipiac all-time appearances record previously held by Matthew Lorenzetti '15 and Mike Spahr '05 with his 63rd time on the mound as a Bobcat. Osieja worked a perfect 8th inning in relief. At the plate, Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York) was 2-for-3 while Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) drove in Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) with the games only run.

Taylor Luciani (Berlin, Connecticut) got the start for the Bobcats and was hit with a hard-luck loss to drop to 1-5 on the season. Luciani gave up two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three. Luciani had now given up two earned runs or less in four of his last five starts with only two wins to show for it.

Luciani pitched five shut-out innings before a triple in the bottom of the 6th headlined a two-run inning for the Gaels. Quinnipiac posted a run on the top of the 7th when Batten hit a bases-loaded ground ball to third base that scored Gibson to cut Iona's lead in half.

Quinnipiac returns to action on Monday, Apr. 17 when they travel to Storrs, Connecticut to take on UConn in a non-conference match-up set for a 3 p.m. start at J.O. Christian Field.

Quinnipiac will then enjoy a five-game home stand featuring Bryant in Tuesday, Apr. 18, followed by a three-game MAAC series against St. Peter's on Apr. 22-23 and a non-conference game against Hartford on Tuesday, Apt. 25.
