NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team scored the final two goals of regulation to pull even, but Rachel Hornick scored on a free position shot with 1:30 left in the second overtime to give Army West Point a 9-8 win over the Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at Yale's Reese Stadium.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 1-3 on the young season, while Army improves its record to 4-1 with the win.
Quinnipiac led 5-4 at the half, but was held to just one goal over the first 24 minutes of the second half as Army pulled ahead. Maunela Cortes scored her third goal of the game at the 6:56 mark to give her team a two-goal lead, and Army won the ensuing draw control with a chance to salt the game away.
However, junior goalie Kyle Larkin (Brightwaters, N.Y.) came up with a big save to keep it a two-goal deficit, and senior midfielder Danielle La Rocca (Voorhees, N.J.) closed the lead to 8-7 when she swept in a shot off a rebound in one motion with 5:08 left, after an initial shot from Alex Hlesciak (Lumberton, N.J.) was saved. The Bobcats then earned the equalizer after an Army yellow card, with La Rocca feeding sophomore Ellie Swenson (Ipswich, Mass.) in front with 3:26 to go to make the score 8-8.
Army had the ball with a chance to go for the win, but freshman midfielder Brianna Fitzgerald (Norwalk, Conn.) had a key stick check from behind to force a turnover, with the ground ball picked up by junior defender Kiera Kelly(West Islip, N.Y.) . Swenson had a good look just before the regulation buzzer, but Army's Maddie Burns made the key save to push the ball wide and force the extra session.
The overtime started with Army still serving over a minute on a yellow card penalty, but the Bobcats were unable to get a shot off. Larkin then had two big saves in the first overtime to keep the game deadlocked, the second coming on Hornick with 14 seconds on the clock. Fitzgerald won the draw control to start the second overtime for the Bobcats, but Burns made a save on Quinnipiac sophomore attack Allison Kuhn (Kingsville, Md.) and the Black Knights were able to clear. After a foul was called on Quinnipiac, Hornick went to the upper corner on a free-position shot for the game-winner.
Army jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game's first 5:41, but the Bobcats scored the next four goals to take the lead. Junior attack Loren Antonacci (Smithtown, N.Y.) started the run with a goal, and then sophomore midfielder Julia Corrice (Sparta, N.J.) scored two straight to knot the score up at 3-3. Antonacci fed Kuhn in front with 13:55 left in the half to give Quinnipiac its first lead, and after Army tied it back up, Antonacci fed Kuhn again to give Quinnipiac a 5-4 lead at the break.
Antonacci finished with a goal and three assists for a team-high four points, while Corrice and Kuhn each had two goals. Kelly had five ground balls to lead the defense, while Larkin had 11 saves.
The Bobcats will be back in action in seven days when they travel to the West Coast to face UC Davis on March 12.
