WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Quinnipiac softball team lost to George Washington, 11-2, on the first day of competition at the Colonial Classic on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 3-3, while George Washington improves to 5-6 on the season.
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) and Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) each had two hits and one RBI in the loss.
Despite losing the start, Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) struck out five batters in only four innings of work.
The Bobcats got on the board early in the first inning to jump ahead of the Colonials. Herzog drew a one-out walk and Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) followed with a single. With runners on first and second, Cordeiro singled to right field to drive in the game's first run and her fourth RBI of the season.
George Washington took the lead in the bottom of the first and never relinquished it after. The Colonials tacked on three runs in the first and two more in the third before the Bobcats responded with another run of their own.
In the top of the fourth inning, Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, Connecticut) led off with a double down the left field line. Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) hit a sac-fly to right field, moving Heimbach to third. Magana then stepped to the plate and blasted a double to right field, driving in the Bobcats' second run of the game and her sixth of the season.
George Washington would add on six more runs before the end of the game, but the Bobcats will look to bounce back on Sunday, when Quinnipiac takes on Bucknell at 9 a.m. before taking on the Colonials in a rematch at 1:30 p.m.
