WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Quinnipiac softball team dropped both games in a doubleheader, losing to Bucknell, 15-11, followed by a 10-2 loss against George Washington on the final day of competition at the Colonial Classic Tournament.
With the losses, Quinnipiac drops to 3-5 on the young season.
Despite losing the first game to Bucknell, Quinnipiac's offense exploded for 11 runs, which is the most so far this season. Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) and Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) each recorded three RBI's and Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) added two of her own.
The Bobcats fell behind early in the contest as Bucknell put up two runs in the top of the first inning. Quinnipiac responded in a loud way in the bottom of the first when Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) launched her first homer of the season to cut the deficit to one.
Bucknell added five more runs in the second inning to take a 7-1 lead, but Quinnipiac continued to battle back. Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) led off the bottom of the second with a double to left field. Two batters later, Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) singled to put runners on first and third. Troyan stepped to the plate and belted a two-run double to center, cutting the score to 7-3. Three batters later, Drake singled to left to drive in Troyan and make the score 7-4.
In the bottom of the third, Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) drew a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to two. Magana followed with a groundout to second, driving in another run, cutting the Bison lead to 7-6.
Bucknell would score seven straight runs before the Bobcats scored again. Despite being down 14-6, Quinnipiac kept fighting. Magana hit a two-run double to left in the bottom of the fifth, then Drake immediately followed with a two-run homer to cut the deficit to four runs.
Bucknell scored once more in the sixth, leaving the Bobcats with one last shot to try to tie the game in the seventh. However, Quinnipiac was only able to muster one more run in the final frame after Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) doubled, scoring Finley from first.
Magana led off the second game with a bang, launching a solo home run in the leadoff spot to give Quinnipiac a 1-0.
George Washington would rally off six straight runs before the Bobcats scored again. In the bottom of the fourth, Czaja grounded out to third with the bases loaded, but Cordeiro was able to score to cut the deficit to 6-2. The Colonials added four more runs before the game ended in six innings.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Friday, March 10, when the Bobcats take on Bryant University and Arizona University on the first day of play in the CSUN tournament in Los Angeles, California.
