HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and went on to capture a 14-4 win over a travel-weary Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
With the loss the Bobcats fall to 1-6 on the season, after traveling 3,000 miles to play their second game in less than 48 hours (Quinnipiac fell 9-8 at Fresno State on Thursday evening). Freshman attack Ashley Bobinski (Kinnelon, N.J.) led the Bobcat offense with two goals and an assist, while junior goalkeeper Kyle Larkin (Brightwaters, N.Y.) had 19 saves.
Hofstra, which was led by five goals from Alyssa Parrella, improves to 3-3 with the win, with two of its losses coming to nationally-ranked teams in Maryland (No. 1) and Johns Hopkins (No. 19).
Hofstra got a leg up early, taking a 4-0 lead at the 15:56 mark on the second goal of the game from Parrella, at which point the Pride held a 12-1 edge in shots. Freshman Ashley Bobinski (Kinnelon, N.J.) got the Bobcats on the board 38 seconds later when she converted on a free position shot, and then converted another free position shot 29 seconds later to quickly make the score 4-2 and give Quinnipiac some momentum.
However, Hofstra's Drew Shapiro bounced back with the next two goals to answer Bobinski's mini-run, restoring a four-goal lead for the Pride on a transition goal with 9:04 left in the half. Senior midfielder Alex Hlesciak (Lumberton, N.J.) scored with 33 seconds left in the half to break a 4-0 Hofstra run and make the score 8-3, but Parrella scored with just six seconds left on a free position shot to complete a first-half hat trick and make the score 9-3 at the break.
Parrella started off the second half with her fourth, and the score remained frozen at 10-3 until Quinnipiac junior attack Loren Antonacci (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored on an unassisted goal with 14:46 remaining. Hofstra, though, closed out on its third 4-0 run of the game to make the final score 14-4.
Larkin had a big day to keep the Bobcats close for a while with her 19 saves as Hofstra held a 33-8 advantage in shots on goal (and a 40-16 edge in total shots). Parrella finished with six points on five goals and an assist for Hofstra, while Shapiro had three goals and three assists for six points as well.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Wednesday for another non-league contest at UMass Lowell, beginning at 3 p.m.
