LOWELL, Mass. – The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to tie the game, but UMass Lowell responded and took a 9-5 win on a frigid Wednesday afternoon at Cushing Field.
Senior Alex Hlesciak (Lumberton, N.J.) had a hat trick for the Bobcats, who fall to 1-7 on the year after their final non-conference game. UMass Lowell improves to 4-2 after picking up their fourth win in a row.
Quinnipiac fell behind 4-0 early, but rallied back to tie the score with a 4-0 run of its own. Sophomore Bianca Kaluta (Bethel, Conn.) scored in transition off a pass from sophomore Allison Kuhn (Kingsville, Md.) to start the run. Junior Emily Byrne (Huntington, N.Y.) then fed freshman Ashley Bobinski (Kinnelon, N.J.) from behind the cage to cut the lead in half, and Hlesciak ended the run with back-to-back goals to tie the score up with just under 10 minutes left.
UMass Lowell answered back, though, with two goals 1:06 apart to take a 6-4 lead at the break. Kaylan DiModugno broke the tie with 7:21 on the clock, and Taylor Sokol followed with 6:15 left in the half with her third of the game to extend the lead to two. Junior goalie Kyle Larkin (Brightwaters, N.Y.) had a save on a free position shot in the final seconds of the half to keep it a two-goal game heading into halftime.
UMass Lowell kept the momentum going after the half as Kristina Keith scored just 1:39 into the second stanza to push the lead to 7-4. Rebecca Idson then added another goal with 20:51 left to make it 8-4, the third different 4-0 run of the game. Hlesciak ended the run with her third goal with 8:14 to play, but that was as close as the Bobcats could come as Idson scored on a free position shot with 4:06 to go to make the final score 9-5.
Larkin had seven saves in net for the Bobcats, as UMass Lowell finished the game with a 23-10 edge in shots. Courtney Barnett had three saves for the River Hawks.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday when it opens MAAC play with a home game against Monmouth at 5 p.m., which will be played at Yale's Reese Stadium.
