SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior third baseman Joseph Burns (Shelton, Conn.) had a pair of RBI singles to give the Quinnipiac baseball team two early leads, but USC Upstate came back to win 5-3 on a walk-off two-run homer from Charlie Carpenter in the bottom of the ninth in the first game of a three-game series on Friday evening at Harley Park.
With the loss, the Bobcats slip to 6-9 on the season, while USC Upstate levels its record at 10-10. Carpenter finished the evening 3-for-3 at the plate, including his winning homer with nobody out in the ninth after a leadoff walk to Brett Hawkins.
Burns had his second RBI single of the day in the top of the fourth inning with two outs to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead, scoring freshman right fielder Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Mass.), who led off the frame with a single. Junior catcher Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Mass.) stretched the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI double.
Junior pitcher Robert Hitt (Suffield, Conn.) threw five solid innings, scattering four hits and striking out two, before giving way to the bullpen in the sixth with a 3-1 lead. Zach Krider had his second RBI double with two outs in the sixth to close within 3-2, and Hunter Gilbert drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to knot the score 3-3. Junior reliever Chris Enns (Canton, Conn.) picked up a key foul out and strikeout to leave the bases loaded and leave the score deadlocked through seven.
The Bobcats drew first blood in the top of the first on an RBI single from Burns. Senior center fielder Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) led off with a walk and went to second on a single from senior shortstop Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.) before Burns drove him home with a single to left.
Hitt kept the game 1-0 in the bottom half when we worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam, getting the second out via a strikeout before Burns snared a liner at third for the final out to end the threat. The Spartans were able to break through in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Krider, but Hitt buckled down and got the next three batters in order to limit the damage.
Senior first baseman Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 3-for-5 for the Bobcats, including a one-out single in the ninth inning, while Marrero and Burns each had two hits. Krider was 2-for-3 with two doubles for the Spartans.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for a 2 p.m. contest before concluding the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
