QU Baseball Falls to Gardner-Webb, 5-2, in First Mid-Week Action of 2017

BOILING SPRINGS, North Carolina - Quinnipiac baseball fell to Gardner-Webb University, 5-2, on Tuesday evening at John Henry Moss Stadium. The Bobcats fall to 6-8 overall in 2017 with the loss.
Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, TN), Brian Moskey (Higganum, CT) and Joseph Burns (Shelton, CT) led the way for Quinnipiac, as all three recorded a pair of hits at the plate. Matthew Batten (Shelton, CT) and Liam Scafariello (Southington, CT) also chipped in with a hit of their own.
Nelson, Moskey and Scafariello all have 16 hits so far in 2017, while Burns, Batten each have 18. All five are hitting above a .270 clip thus far in 14 contests.
Both of the Bobcats' runs came in the top half of the first, when Nelson ripped a single to right-center field on a 1-1 pitch to plate two runs and make it 2-0 Quinnipiac. The Runnin' Bulldogs then scored three times in the third inning, once in the fourth and once in the fifth.
Alex Vargas (New York, NY) started his third game of the season on the mound for Quinnipiac, going 5.0 innings while giving up just four hits and four earned runs. The senior walked three and struck out three in the loss.
Freshman Blake DeCarr (Foxboro, MA) lasted the last 3.0 innings on the hill in impressive fashion. He gave up just one hit and no earned runs. DeCarr now has a 2.89 ERA in his first 9.1 innings on the hill with the Bobcats.
The Bobcats totaled eight hits to Gardner-Webb's five. Quinnipiac is back in action on Wednesday (tomorrow), March 15, traveling to Greensboro, NC to square off with North Carolina A&T State University at 4 p.m.
