
QU Softball Beats Eastern Michigan, 4-3, to Close Madeira Beach Invitational

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.- The Quinnipiac softball team was able to close out the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational by beating host Eastern Michigan, 4-3 on the final day of competition on Sunday morning.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 3-2 while Eastern Michigan drops to 3-2 with the loss.
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California), Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey), Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida), Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon), Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California) and Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) all reached base multiple times in the contest.
Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) earned the win, going 5.1 innings, without giving up an earned run and only four hits, while striking out one batter.
Magana led the game off with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch, then to third on a passed ball. Two batters later, Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) flew out to left field, allowing Magana to come home and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Quinnipiac allowed EMU to score twice before the Bobcats took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Marchuk and Czaja led the inning off with back-to-back singles, giving the Bobcats a runner on first and second with no outs. Two batters later, Drake drew a walk to load the bases. Cordeiro then stepped to the plate and singled to right, scoring Marchuk to tied the game at two. Czaja tried to score as well but was tagged out at home.
Larsen then stepped to the plate and singled to load the bases once more. Courtney then reached base after the EMU third baseman committed an error, allowing the Bobcats to take a 3-2 lead.
The Bobcats tacked on another run in the sixth, beginning when Marchuk drew a one-out walk. Two batters later, Magana singled to right, setting up Quinnipiac with a runner on first and second with two outs situation. Drake then stepped to the plate and knocked a clutch hit to left, scoring Marchuk and giving the Bobcats a 4-2 lead.
The Eagles would add one more to the score after scoring on an error in the bottom of the sixth.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Friday, March 3, at 1 p.m. when Quinnipiac travels to take on George Washington University in the Colonial Classic Tournament.
