MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - The Quinnipiac softball team split a doubleheader on Day two of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational on Saturday evening in Florida. The Bobcats defeated Villanova, 2-1, before falling to Boston University, 8-1, improving to 2-2 on the season.
Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) had the game-winning RBI in the fifth inning and freshman Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) recorded the first win of her career in the victory.
Villanova got on the board first in the first inning after recording three straight singles to take an early 1-0 lead. However that would be the only run Long would give up.
Quinnipiac was able to battle back and tie and take the lead in the fifth inning. Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) earned a walk to start the inning and advanced to second after Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) sac-bunted her over. Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) then stepped to the plate and launched a triple to right-center, driving in Heimbach and tying the game a one. It was Magana's team-leading fifth RBI of the season.
Drake followed immediately after with a single up the middle to drive in Magana, in what ended up being the game-winning run.
The Bobcats would hold on to secure the victory as Long cruised in six innings of work, giving up just one run in the process. She was relieved when Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) came into the game in the seventh inning.
Herzog ran into some trouble in the seventh as the first batter of the inning reached third on a single and error. However, Herzog recorded three straight out to record her first save of the season and secured the Bobcats 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
In the second game, the Bobcats fell behind early as Boston University was able to plate five runs in the first three innings.
The Bobcats got on the board in the fourth after Magana led the inning with a single. Drake then doubled, sending Magana to third. Two batters later, Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) grounded out to the shortstop, but Magana was able to tag up and score to cut the deficit to four runs.
The Bobcats were unable to complete the comeback however, as the Terriers tacked on three more runs. Herzog suffered the loss, going six innings, giving up only four earned runs and striking out five batters in the process.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 19 when Quinnipiac takes on Eastern Michigan at noon on the final day of competition at the Madeira Beach Invitational.
