Casey Herzog Throws Four-Hit Shutout Against CMU
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Quinnipiac softball team split a doubleheader on Friday at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational in Florida. The Bobcats fell to Oakland, 8-7, in the opening game before picking up their first win of 2017 with a 3-0 victory over Central Michigan. Junior pitcher Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, NY) threw a complete-game shutout, going the full seven innings and giving up only four hits while striking out nine.
After dropping the first game of the day, the Bobcats bounced back in a big way. Herzog pitched a shutout in dominating fashion, as she only allowed six runners to reach base all game, with two of them coming off of errors. It was Herzog's first shutout since May 12, when she threw a complete-game four-hit shutout to beat Manhattan 1-0 on the second day of the MAAC Tournament.
Quinnipiac's offense did not let Herzog's gem go to waste as the Bobcats were able to plate three runs on the day.
Quinnipiac got on the board first after senior Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut) singled to the pitcher with one out in the bottom of the third inning. After Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) flied out to center, Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) lined a double to left-center, driving in Vitale to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) led off with a single, followed by a Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California) walk, setting up a runner on first and second with no-outs. Vitale then smacked a single up the middle for her second hit of the game, driving in Courtney. Two batters later, Magana singled for her third hit of the day, loading the bass. Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) then hit a sacrifice-fly to center, driving in Marchuk to give Quinnipiac the 3-0 lead, which they held onto until the end.
In the first game of the day, Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) and Magana both launched their first home runs of the season. However, it was not enough as the Bobcats fell to Oakland University, 8-7.
With the win over CMU in game two, the Bobcats improve to 1-1 and will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 17 when the team takes on Villanova at 4:30 p.m., followed by a contest against Boston University at 7 p.m. at the Madeira Beach Invitational.
