POTSDAM, NY - No. 9/9 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey fell, 1-0, vs. No. 4/5 Clarkson on Sunday afternoon at Cheel Arena. The Bobcats move to 18-8-6 (11-6-3 ECAC) with the loss, while Clarkson improves to 23-4-5 (17-1-2 ECAC) with the victory. Quinnipiac is now 2-5-2 vs. ranked opponents this year.
The Bobcats currently sit No. 6 in the ECAC Hockey standings (25 points) now, with Colgate (27 points) and Princeton (26 points) just ahead.
Clarkson senior forward Jessica Gillham netted the game's only goal with just under six minutes left in the third period, helping the Golden Knights stretch their undefeated streak to seven games.
Quinnipiac senior goaltender Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) made 17 total saves on the night, and is now giving up just 1.53 goals-per-game to go along with a .919 goals-against average this year for the Bobcats. She made 41 saves in total on the weekend.
Rossman and the Quinnipiac defense came out strong in the first stanza. The Bobcats killed off a 5-on-3 chance with just over 10 minutes left in the period, while the senior goaltender recorded seven total saves in the first 20 minutes.
The Bobcats' then applied offensive pressure throughout the second, outshooting the Golden Knights 11-2. Freshman forward Kenzie Prater (Hudson, Wisconsin) had one of Quinnipiac's best chances, hitting bar less than five minutes into the period.
Clarkson broke through in the third period, though. Gillham netted her sixth goal of the season with 5:37 left in the third, streaking up the ice and poking in a rebound off a Rhyen McGill shot to give the Golden Knights a one-goal advantage.
Junior forward Taylar Cianfarano (Osego, New York) and Prater both had a chance with less than 45 seconds remaining on Clarkson's doorstep, but the Golden Knights' goaltender Shea Tiley stood strong to preserve her third shutout of the year.
The Bobcats recorded 21 shots on goal in total to Clarkson's 18, while winning 28 of 47 faceoffs. Quinnipiac killed all three penalties they committed.
Quinnipiac returns home next weekend for its final two regular season games of the 2016-17 campaign, hosting RPI on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m., then Union on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m.
