Quinnipiac Field Hockey's Hard-Fought Battle Against No. 1 UConn Ends In 3-1 Loss
10/27/2017 5:25:00 PM | Field Hockey
HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac field hockey game lost to nationally-ranked No. 1 UConn, 3-1, in a BIG EAST Conference match-up at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium in Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats' season concludes with an overall record of 6-12 including a 3-4 mark in conference play while UConn improves to 16-0 on the year with a 7-0 record in the BIG EAST.
The Bobcats held off several Huskies' scoring opportunities early in the game before UConn leading scorer Charlotte Veitner broke through for the game's first tally. Quinnipiac pushed back for the remainder of the game before senior Lauren Belskie (Hillsborough, New Jersey) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to tie the game in the 21st minute. Backed by an elite performance from sophomore goalkeeper Livy Golini (York, Maine) that featured an array of skilled saves, the Bobcats held UConn to its lowest goal totalin the all-time series over its last six games. In addition, Belskie became just the second BIG EAST student-athlete to score against UConn this season and erased the Huskies' scoreless streak in conference play at over 291 minutes.
The loss, unfortunately, ends the Bobcats' 2017 season and the careers of a talented class that featured UConn transfer Montana Fleming (Delran, New Jersey), co-captains Dayna Barlow (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) and Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Connecticut) as well as Belskie, Lily Shemo (Luzerne, Pennsylvania), Kiera Godusky (Allentown, Pennsylvania), Felicia Costanzo (Yorktown Heights, New York), Rachel Hamm (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) and Selina Reichert (Lower Hutt, New Zealand). Barlow and Federico had career years, with Barlow finishing her career as one of the all-time leading scorers in Quinnipiac history while Federico's solid all-around play consistently guided the Bobcats through the rigors of a challenging schedule. Belskie became a dominant force on both ends of the field, leading the team in goals while also emerging as one of the conference's top shut-down defenders. The game also signals the end of the careers of fifth-year senior Shemo and Hamm who developed into leaders both on-and-off the field as well as reliable line-up mainstays Costanzo, Godusky and Reichert who saw constant playing time over their careers.
