HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's soccer team lost to Niagara, 3-0, in a MAAC game on Saturday afternoon from Niagara Field. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 0-2 in conference play and 4-4-1 overall while Niagara levels its MAAC record at 1-1 while improving to 2-5-1 on the season.
In a game that was a near mirror image to last year's 4-0 loss at home to the Purple Eagles, the Bobcats were outshot only 14-10 and generated a season-high 12 corner kicks compared to just four for Niagara but weren't able to convert throughout the course of play.
Quinnipiac saw plenty of the ball in the early going as the Bobcats drew five corner kicks and fired two shots on-target all within the first 16 minutes of play. Playing against the run of play, Niagara took advantage of a defensive lapse and Eva Bachmann was left uncovered just above the box. Receiving a centering pass from Laura Ortiz on the far sideline, Bachmann had the time to set up her shot and she made no mistake blasting a goal past a diving Olivia Myszewski (Elm Grove, Wisconsin) in net.
Trying to regain footing, the Bobcats quickly saw the Purple Eagles increase their lead less than two minutes later as this time it was Ortiz on the finishing end as Bachmann flicked an overhead pass over the retreating Quinnipiac defenders. The Bachmann pass hit Ortiz in-stride who took one touch before chipping a shot over a challenging Myszewski in the cage to make it 2-0.
Four more corner kicks and three more shots from the Bobcats came following Niagara's second goal but Quinnipiac came up empty heading into the halftime locker room.
Trailing two goals with 45 minutes remaining, Quinnipiac showed signs of life in the opening minutes of the second half. Nadya Gill (Toronto, Ontario) powered through the Niagara midfield and was fouled inches outside the Purple Eagles' defensive box. Jess Cascio (Hebron, Connecticut) sent a blister towards the net but Niagara's wall was just tall enough as the goal-seeking shot was deflected up and out of harm's way for the Purple Eagles.
Another terrific scoring chance came minutes later as a low crossing pass made its way across the box to Carly Glaser (New City, New York) who was left wide open at the near post but the junior forward wasn't able to get enough of the ball on her shot attempt and Shangyne Samuels cleared away the opportunity.
Those two missed opportunities loomed large as Niagara answered back with a match-sealing goal as Kori Thorne headed in a feed from Bachmann coming off a Purple Eagles corner to make it 3-0.
Myszewski made three stops in net for the Bobcats while Samuels posted a seven-save shutout for Niagara, Kelly Caruso (Rocky Hill, Connecticut) led the Bobcats with two shots-on-goal for the afternoon.
A long-awaited return home looms for the Bobcats as Quinnipiac hosts in-state foe Fairfield on Wednesday, Sept. 28 with a 3 PM kick off.
