
QU Baseball Splits Doubleheader on Thursday at Fairfield with 5-4 Win and 6-2 Loss

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac baseball team split a doubleheader with the first-place Fairfield Stags Thursday afternoon, winning the first game 5-4 before falling in the second game, 6-2.
With the split, the Bobcats pick up their 21st win of the season to move their record to 21-30 (10-13 MAAC) on the season while the Stags go to 28-24 (16-7 MAAC). Quinnipiac's split coupled by a Manhattan win knocked the Bobcats out of playoff contention for the first time since joining the MAAC.
Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) hit his first home run of the season with a two-run home run in the first game of the doubleheader. Saporito also singled and scored two runs for the Bobcats.
Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) singled four times, walks and scored two runs in the doubleheader while Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) tallied four hits with a double and a run scored. He extended his hitting streak to 10 games with two hits in each game.
Game 1
Saporito went 2 for 4 with his home run, two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Bobcats with the only extra base hit of the game. Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) singled three times and scored once in the game while Burns singled twice and scored.
Starting pitcher Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Massachusetts) tossed six innings to pick up the no-decision, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts. With two strikeouts, Jankins finishes the season with 79 strikeouts, the second most in a single-season in program history behind Chris Gloor's 81 from the 2009 season.
Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) pitched the final three innings to pick up his second win of the season. He allowed one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Burns singled through the left side of the infield before advancing to third on an opposite field single by Oestreicher. Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) reached on a fielder's choice to score Burns from third base before the Bobcats stranded runners on second and third.
Three walks and a sacrifice fly tied the game for Fairfield in the bottom of the third inning before Quinnipiac retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Oestreicher singled to lead off the inning. One batter later, Saporito smashed his two run home run to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead.
The Stags pulled within a run in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single by Brendan Tracy before tying the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI triple by Troy Scocca.
Two runs in the top of the eighth inning gave the Bobcats a 5-3 lead, enough to pick up the win. With two outs in the inning, Gibson singled to center and moved up to second on Saporito's single through the left side. After a Batten walk and a Fairfield pitching change, Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) and Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tennessee) drew back-to-back four pitch RBI walks for the two runs. Fairfield scored once on a RBI double from Scocca but stranded two runners on base to end the eighth inning.
Game 2
Batten was the offensive leader in game two as he went 3 for 4 with a two runs scored for his 11th three-hit game of the season and 19th multiple-hit game overall. Burns also went 2 for 3 in the game while Pescitelli had the lone RBI with a RBI single.

Batten had an unconventional trip around the bases after leading off the game with a single. He moved up to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch before scoring on a balk.
Batten also led off the third inning with a single to centerfield before moving up to second on a Moskey sacrifice bunt. Batten then advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming home to score on Pescitelli's RBI single.
Fairfield exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Jake Salpietro before three straight doubles from Kevin Radziewicz, Mac Crispino and Tracy. Scocca added a bases loaded RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning and Salpietro hit a RBI double in the bottom of the six for their six unanswered runs to win the second game, 6-2, and knock the Bobcats out of playoff contention.
The Quinnipiac baseball team will wrap up the 2016 season with a single game on Friday, May 20 at the Fairfield Stags with first pitch set for 1 PM.
