
QU Baseball Falls in Final Game of 2016 at Fairfield, 8-4

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) scored the game-tying run in the top of the ninth inning before the Quinnipiac baseball team came up short in the final game of the regular season, falling to the Fairfield Stags, 8-4.
The Bobcats fall to 21-31 (10-14 MAAC) and finish the season with 20 or more wins for the second season in a row, the first time since winning 20 or more games from 2004 to 2007. Fairfield improves to 29-24 and finishes first in the MAAC Standings with a 17-7 conference record.
Senior Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, New York) finished the game 2 for 3 with a double, walk and run scored while senior Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) went 2 for 4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) had a pair of singles. Senior John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) walked in the final game of his college career.
Every graduating senior and graduate student played in the final game of their college career, with Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, New Jersey) making his first start of the season in the no-decision, tossing three no-hit innings with a walk and a strikeout. Justin Thomas (Enfield, Connecticut) and Joseph Scaglione (Wyckoff, New Jersey) also pitched in the loss.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning over the Stags as Batten once again led off with a single. He went first to third on a Pescitelli single up the middle before scoring on Iannotti's sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Fairfield tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Mac Crispino RBI single to right centerfield that scored Kevin Radziewicz.
Quinnipiac took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning with a pair of runs. Pescitelli walked and stole second before coming home to score on Iannotti's RBI single to right field. Iannotti then moved up to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Burns' double to right field. Oestreicher brought home Iannotti with a sacrifice fly to right field.
After the Stags scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Bobcats scored in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Saporito reached on an error before he was forced out at second base on Batten's fielder's choice. Batten then came home to score with two outs in the inning on Pescitelli's double down the right field line and an error by right fielder Jake Salpietro.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Stags recorded three straight singles to load the bases before Brendan Tracy hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game, 8-4.
