
QU Baseball Drops Final Game of Series at Canisius, 13-5

Quinnipiac's 13-5 loss snaps their three-game winning streak as they fall to 20-29 (9-12 MAAC) while Canisius (27-25, 13-8 MAAC) snaps their three-game losing streak. The Bobcats sit in eighth place in the MAAC standings with three games left in the regular season and are two games out of the final MAAC playoffs spot.
Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) singled and drove in three RBIs for the Bobcats while Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tennessee) went 3 for 5 with a double and three runs scored. Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, New York) doubled with two walks and two runs scored and Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) reached base four times with two singles and two walks.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Mathew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) doubled to lead off the game before he was tagged out at third base on a Nelson fielder's choice. Pescitelli followed with a double to right field to move up Nelson to third base before Iannotti singled to centerfield to score both Nelson and Pescitelli.
Quinnipiac's lead was short-lived as Canisius put four runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning on one hit and five walks, including a stretch of four straight walks followed by a hit by pitch. The Golden Griffins added another run in the bottom of the second inning as Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, Massachusetts) replaced starting pitcher Alex Vargas (New York, New York) and gave up a run.
After two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for Canisius, Justin Thomas (Enfield, Connecticut) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings to keep the Bobcats in the game. The Bobcats added two more runs to trail by three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Nelson led off with a double and moved up to third as Pescitelli reached on a fielding error by the right fielder. Iannotti grounded out to shortstop to score Nelson before Pescitelli eventually came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut).
Canisius batted around in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Golden Griffins scored six runs on pair of RBI singles and a pair of RBI doubles.
The Bobcats added one more run in the top of the ninth inning to pull within 13-5. After back-to-back strikeouts to start in the inning, Nelson struck out swinging but reached first on a passed ball. A wild pitch put Nelson on second before Pescitelli walked. Iannotti loaded the bases as he reached on an error by the Canisius second baseman. Burns followed up with a bases loaded walk to score Nelson.
Quinnipiac wraps up the regular season this weekend when the Bobcats travel to Fairfield, Connecticut to face the Fairfield Stags in a doubleheader on Thursday, May 19 beginning at 12 PM followed by a single game on Friday, May 20 at 12 PM.
