
Burns and Iannotti Power QU Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep Over Canisius, 5-1 and 7-4

BUFFALO, New York – Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) and Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) each came up big for the Quinnipiac baseball team Saturday afternoon as the Bobcats swept their doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex against the Canisius Golden Griffins, 5-1 and 7-4.
Burns went 4 for 7 in the doubleheader with a pair of home runs, a double, five RBIs, three runs scored and a walk while Iannotti went 3 for 6 with a double, triple, four RBIs, three runs scored a pair of walks.
The Bobcats extended their winning streak to three games with the doubleheader sweep, improving to 20-28 (9-11 MAAC) while the Golden Griffins fall to 26-25 (12-8 MAAC). Quinnipiac vaulted itself right back into MAAC Playoffs contention as they sit in seventh place behind Niagara (11-10 MAAC) for the final playoff spot.
Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Massachusetts) recorded nine strikeouts in game one to give him 77 strikeouts this season, four strikeouts away from tying Chris Gloor's single-season program record 81 from the 2009 season. He also has 178 strikeouts in his career after the game, moving into fourth place in Division I program history and eighth all-time.
Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) picked up his eighth save of the season in game two of the doubleheader to break Gary Binkiewicz's program record for saves in a single season of seven.
Game One
Burns had his best game of the entire season in game one of the doubleheader as he drove in all five RBIs for the Bobcats. He went 3 for 5 with two home runs and a double, and came home to score a pair of runs.
Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) had the only other multiple-hit game as he went 2 for 4 while Iannotti singled, scored two runs and drove in one RBI. Batten singled, walked, scored a run and stole a base for the Bobcats.
Jankins was electric on the hill as he tossed six innings to win his fifth game of the season. He scattered five hits with one run allowed, two walks and nine strikeouts to tie his season-high for strikeouts in a game.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top foo the first inning as Burns drove home two RBIs with a two-out double. Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) led off the game with an infield single to second base. After two strikeouts, Iannotti walked to put two runners on for Burns who belted his double to dead centerfield at the Demske Sports Complex.
Canisius got their only run in the bottom of the second as Adam Tricarico grounded out to Batten at shortstop to score Christ Conley.
Quinnipiac got two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on Burns' second extra base hit of the game. Iannotti reached on an infield single and moved up to second on a throwing error. After Canisius brought in Aaron Casper for starting pitcher Alex Godzak (0-2), Burns launched his first home run of the game to centerfield to give the Bobcats a 4-1 lead.
From there, Jankins took control as he recorded six of his nine strikeouts through the sixth inning, and picked off a runner from third base trying to score, his third pick off of the year.
Burns homered once again in his third at bat of the game to make it 5-0 in the top of the sixth inning to make it 5-1 Quinnipiac as he launched it over the right field fence with two outs in the inning.
Game 2
The Bobcats finished off the sweep as Iannotti was the hero in game two, highlighted by his three-RBI triple in the top of the seventh inning. Iannotti finished 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, triple, four RBIs and one run scored. John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs while Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tennessee) singled twice and scored a run.
Taylor Luciani (Berlin, Connecticut) picked up his fourth win of the season he went the first four innings of the game, allowing just two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
Luciani then gave way to Justin Thomas (Enfield, Connecticut) who allowed just two hits over 1 1/3 innings of relief. Hitt pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout.
Canisius took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the third inning after a couple of scoreless innings between the two teams. Jake Lumley and Anthony Massicci each walked and moved into scoring positions on a balk by Luciani. Liam Wilson grounded out to second to score Lumley before Massicci came home to score on Luciani's second balk of the inning.
The Bobcats answered right back with four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, New York) led off the inning with a double to right field and moved up to third on a fielding error. Iannotti followed Pescitelli with a RBI double to centerfield for the first run of the game. Burns walked to put runners on first and second for Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts), who singled to left field to score Iannotti. A wild pitch moved Burns and Gibson into scoring position where they came home to score on Bodenhamer's two-RBI double to right field.
Thomas held the Bobcats lead in the fifth and sixth innings before giving way to Hitt to finish off the sixth inning.
Quinnipiac scored three key insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-2 lead heading into the final half inning. Bodenhamer singled to lead off the inning before Matthew Payero (Corona, New York) came on as a pinch runner. Batten and Nelson also singled in the inning to load the bases. After a Pescitelli strikeout, Iannotti tripled to deep right field to clear the bases.
Canisius got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh but Hitt held on as the Bobcats won their third straight game.
