Battle Royale
The Quinnipiac baseball team returns to MAAC play this weekend when they host the Monmouth Hawks in a three-game series with MAAC Playoff implications. The series has been shifted due to the weather this weekend, with the single game on Friday, April 29 at 3 PM followed by the doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 with the seven inning game at 12 PM and the nine inning game beginning a half hour after the seven-inning game ends.
All-Time Against Monmouth
Quinnipiac and Monmouth have an extensive history dating back to the Bobcats joining Division I in 1998-99, with Quinnipiac going a 21-36 in their 57 career games. Last season, the Bobcats took the series down in West Long Branch, New Jersey, 2-1. The Bobcats picked up a shutout in game one of the series, 9-0, behind Thomas Jankins' and Taylor Luciani's combined two-hit shutout before falling, 6-1, in the second game of the series. The Bobcats won the rubber match in the final game of the series, 5-3.
Scouting the Hawks
Monmouth comes into the weekend with a 20-20 record on the season and 10-5 record in MAAC play. The Hawks have struggled as of late though, only winning two of their last six games after taking the series at Marist. Monmouth's Shaine Hughes has been on fire this season, batting .385 with 62 hits, 51 doubles, 34 RBIs, 35 runs scored and seven stolen bases. Four players are batting well over .300 while Dan Shea is batting .309 with nine doubles, six home runs, 39 RBIs and has 27 walks and seven stolen bases. Projected starting pitchers Ricky Dennis, Anthony Ciavarella and Frank Trimarco all have ERA's under 5.00 and a combined record of 13-8. Dennis leads the way with a 3.61 ERA and .277 opponent batting average while Ciavarella leads the staff with 51 strikeouts and Trimarco has pitched the most innings at 61 2/3.
Mid-Week Madness
The Bobcats went 1-1 in their mid-week slate with an 11-5 loss to Hartford in eight innings on Tuesday followed by Wednesday's 7-0 shutout of Massachusetts. Four players tallied four hits over the two games led by Joseph Burns' .571 batting average and two doubles. Brian Moskey had a double, home run, three RBIs and two runs scored to go along with three stolen bases.
MAAC Update
The Bobcats are currently sixth in the MAAC standings with a 6-6 record, just one game back of Siena for fifth in the league. Monmouth sits in third place in the league standings with a 10-5 record and their 10 wins are tied for the second most in the league. The Bobcats have improved to be one of the top teams in the MAAC statistically as they ranked first in sacrifice flies (17) and saves (12); second in home runs (20), sacrifice bunts (27), innings pitched (321 2/3), batters struck out looking (80), runners picked off (7) and fielding percentage (.972); third in hits (329) and stolen bases (50); fourth in batting average (.258), slugging percentage (.363); and fifth in on base percentage (.345), runs scored (185), doubles (61), walks (148), and opponent batting average (.293).
MAAC Weekly Awards
Matthew Batten was named the MAAC Baseball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and Brian Moskey was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career, as announced by the league office on April 26.
On Fire
Brian Moskey extended his hitting streak to 11 games this week as he tallied four hits in two games against Hartford and UMass. Moskey's best game came against the Minutemen where he went 3 for 5 with his second home run of the season, a double, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Over Moskey's 11-game winning streak, Moskey has risen from .217 on April 14 to .288 on April 27 and tallied four three-hit games over that span. He also leads the team with 11 doubles this season.
Rockin' the Basepaths
Rob Pescitelli picked up four hits during the two mid-week games as he picked up a double, scored one run and drove in a RBI. He has been a rock offensively, with a .317 batting average and .452 on base percentage thanks to 32 walks and 46 hits. Pescitelli is tied with Batten with 16 stolen bases for the most on the team. Pescitelli is currently third in the MAAC with a .455 on base percentage, tied for first with 34 runs scored, tied first with 32 walks, and tied second with 16 stolen bases,
Matthew in the Middle
Matthew Oestreicher extended his hitting streak to four games as he tallied two multiple-hit games this week. Oestreicher hit a double, scored a run and drove in a RBI in each game for the Bobcats this week. His four-hit week rose his batting average to .301 this season with three doubles.
Double Time
Joseph Burns extended his hitting streak to seven games and has risen his batting average by 29 points to .247 this season after a pair of two-hit games. Burns ripped a double in each game to give him 10 of the season, second on the team. Burns also drove in two RBIs for 17 this season.
Heating Up
Aron Fried had the fourth highest batting average of the week at .429 as he tallied three hits in extended his hitting streak to three games. Fried had two hits and a run against UMass on Wednesday, giving him three multiple-hit games in his career.
Scoring Big
Matthew Batten had two hits and walked three times this week but really made his presence felt on the base paths where he stole two bases to tie Pescitelli for the most on the team with 16 this season. Batten has now scored 32 runs in 40 games.
One Hit Wonder
Brandon Shileikis made his best start of the season on Wednesday afternoon as he allowed just one hit over six shutout innings. The win was Shileikis' third of the season while lowering his ERA to 2.10. Shileikis struck out two batters in the game, giving him seven this season in 25 2/3 innings pitched.
Ace of Spades
Thomas Jankins picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season against the Jaspers as the Bobcats' ace pitched 7 2/3 innings for his eighth start this season that lasted six or more innings. Jankins allowed just three runs (two earned) on one walk and four strikeouts. Jankins has issued one or fewer walks in four starts this season. With four strikeouts, Jankins now has 55 this season to set a new single-season career-high. Chris Gloor '09 owns the Division I program record for strikeouts in a season with 81. With 156 strikeouts in his career, Jankins is 13 strikeouts away from tying Turk Wendell for the 10th most strikeouts in program history.
Viva Las Vargas
Alex Vargas picked up his first career win as a Bobcat on Sunday afternoon after tossing five innings for the Bobcats. He did not allow a single earned run and just three hits on the day with two walks. Vargas continues to lead the team in ERA at 2.55 while his .228 opponent batting average is second on the team to fellow reliever Matthew Osieja.
More Mid-Week
The Bobcats will wrap up their nine-game homestand when they host the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils on Tuesday, May 3 before traveling to Smithfield, Rhode Island to take on former NEC foe the Bryant Bulldogs at 3 PM on Wednesday, May 4.
